FS: Rare 400mm steering wheel with fat grip

I have only heard of one more of these steering wheels. It's probably a Special Order wheel. It's factory done, no doubt about that. It's in good shape. The stitching on some places has worn out. Maybe a rally application?
    Made mars 1973, 901 347 081 10. Asking USD 400.

    Thanks for looking, Pär

Agreed, I've never seen one of these either. For curiousity can you measure the circumference of the wheel rim? Thanks.

    Close ups???

Par, could you take close up pictures of the areas I've circled please. Not trying to be judgemental but, the wheel (though a spectacular job) looks to me like it has been recovered . The finishing around the spokes does not match anything I've seen that was factory. It also looks like evidence of previous leather further in on the spokes.

I'm just interested in the technical aspects of the wheel and not trying to demean your posting.

PET lists it as a steering wheel leather 400, standard for S, optional for E and T.

It is correct that the 73 S had a leather steering wheel, however it had a narrow grip. My steering wheel could be a standard wheel that gotten a extra layer at the factory. Over the years I have had several 380 RS and 916/6 wheels in leather with fat grip and they have had another layer leather underneath, or the rubber foam. So as a small manufacturer I think many of the parts was created ad hoc, depending on demand.

The grip is ca 92 mm.

I have taken some more pictures and in my world this has been done at the factory. But who can really say what is true or not, I have had 911's since 1979 and I learn new things all the time!

As a follow up on this, both my RSR/914 GT steering wheels are 90 mm in circumference. Also the leather at the spokes is finished flush at the end of the spoke but the leather is doubled over, not just cut off.

I'll only make one more observation on this wheel. The stitching on the spokes is a cross stitch which is not in line with any factory stitching I've seen for this area of the wheels. I've always seen a baseball stitch on the factory finished wheels.

By the way, there was a gentleman at GAF (didn't catch his name) but, he had the most beautiful original 71 dated 914-6 wheel. Boxed, NOS. Man, if I had the extra bones I would have bought it. It was gorgeous.
