What year what wood wheel & correct wheel for 67 car

I have been told several different stories and am keen to understand the truthful facts.

As far as I know there were three wood wheels:
    1. Alloy frame with light wood rivited to the frame, no black stripe (earliest)
    2. Alloy frame with dark wood (I assume glued) to alloy frame with black stripe in wood (thereafter)
    3. Steel frame with medium dark wood with black stripe in wood (latest)

I am not at all clear when the change was from 1 to 2 and from 2 to 3 and for which models (incl. 912) was which wheel standard and for which an option?

I understand that in 1967 wood wheels were no longer standard. Which wood wheel would have been optional for 67?

Also the leather wrapped wheel for 1967 911S, was that on a steel or alloy frame? If anyone has pictures of an unrestored leather wrapped wheel correct for a 1967 911S I would be most grateful (or if someone has a nice one for sale I would also be interested in hearing about it).

    Thanks a billion!

    Anthony

My '67 came optioned with a wooden wheel. It is a steel frame. As far as I know the alloy frame wheels had been discontinued. My guess is that they didn't hold up to well to pushing and pulling.

Here's a photo of it in the car.

    Good luck,

    Tom

In 67 the wood wheel was a no cost option for the S, and optional for the base 911 (shorty..) and the 912.

Changeover from alloy to steel was in the 65 model year from what I've determined.

Wood wheel with Aluminum frame and rivets

Anthony, your explanation of the three wood wheels has the first:

"1. Alloy frame with light wood rivited to the frame, no black stripe (earliest)"

Can you point me to your source for this? Hot doggy - can there be more? Car 300 149 has a med/dark wood with the rivets and I have not seen another - and I've been looking for 20+ years.

    Thanks.

    Wood wheel question

Brett Johnson's book (911 & 912 Porsche, A Restorer's Guide to Authenticity) mentions the three wheels and that there was a change mid 65 - but not clear to me which wheel changed to which. I had always assumed number 1 to number 2, but I am beginning to believe it was number 2 to number 3.

I have sent Brett an email - will post the answer as soon as I get one.

    Wood wheel question

Here Brett's reply to my query:

Regrettably, it has been 21 years since I researched my 911 book and I have never revisited the subject matter or revised any of the text. I'm pretty confident that 300888, which I owned in the early 1980s did not have the rivets, but never put a magnet on the spokes. I comment in the book that the change to no rivets and steel occurred in 1965, but no longer have contacts with original contributors, which is where the original information came from. I'm nearly certain that the wheel for a 1967S would have been the steel spoked one, since the standard leather covered wheel was this way.

    Wood with rivets.

Oh yes. Thank you Anthony for posting Bretts reply.

The wheel with the rivets in Dr. Brett Johnson's book is in 300 149. Only one - so far. If you find any other let me know.

    Thanks
