Need safe gentle cleaner for 68 anodized aluminum window trim

Can anyone suggest just a safe, basic cleaner for the window tirm on my '68. It's in pretty good shape, but has some water spots, etc. I tried some searches, but all involved restoration.

Chrome cleaner? I was concerned that chrome polish would strip off the anodizing.

    Thanks,

    Henry-

For mild cleaning like that I have always used Mothers® Mag & Aluminum polish. It may take several applications and a lot of elbow grease, but is definitely not so abrasive as to attack the anodizing.

A chrome polish like Simichrome does not effect the anodizing either, in my experience.

Thanks Tom! I'll try the Mother's since it's easier to find.

    Cleaners

Surely Mother's Aluminium cleaner is an abrasive that is designed to remove an oxidised surface from aluminium.

I used to use it to clean my unpainted Lotus Se7en and it was excellent.

It will, however, eventually polish through the oxide film that is produced by anodising and spoil the finish.

If the anodising has stained due to some chemical fall out it is unlikely you will be able to remove any discolouration with a polish. You would probably have to polish and re-anodise.

Please correct me if i'm wrong, but 68 where chrome. The change to aluminium window frame was MY69.

Stick a magnet on it, to make sure.

Maguires all metal polish does a really nice job.

    Ok, you're wrong.
'68 are one year only anodized aluminum vent windows.
earlier versions are chromed brass, I believe.
'69 went to fixed windows, IIRC.

    Hi Henry,

I found a product sold at Home Depot called Spot-X Hard Water Stain & Spot Remover. It worked great on glass and trim. http://www.glass-restorer.com/

    Best regards,

Try rubbing some Vaseline on the spots.
