    Red Key / Black Key

After moving, I have misplaced the Red key for my 1970 911 T. The Black key will not lock the glovebox or the trunk.

After a breif search of the web I am seeing key sets that say they are for 67-94. But some how I remember the 70 being different from my 89 Carerra. Further, sites state that the Black key is the master and the Red is for Vallet, meaning that it only operates the iginition. If I recall the master key has a extra grove on one side of the key.

Question one is can the black key be used to master the Red key?

And is the Black key supposed to be the master?

    Douglas,

Yes, you can use the black key to have the red valet key cut. Some have had problems getting their keys cut, even if a blank is provided. When I was in NC the local dealer cut my keys for free without any problem.

Yes, the black key is the master key. A new Porsche should have come with two of each color.

You mention the black key will not lock the glovebox or the trunk... it should be the only key to lock the glovebox. If you have a trunk lock your T must be a Targa. Maybe Targa people can chime in here but did Targas come with a separate key (aside from the black/red keys) to lock the trunk?

Black master is supposed to work the ignition, trunk and glovebox. That is how mine works. Should not be a separate key. Red valet key can be used to cut black key and vice versa. Difference is in key from what I can tell.

Any chance the locks were re-keyed?

Red key= doors and ignition. Black= all locks. A locksmith would have to know which pins are split in the box and t handle to cut your red key. Or is it which are split on the doors and ignition? I forget.

I used to key locks for apts where the master would open all, but the individual keys only worked for one lock. It's painfully simple. Some pins are split and work in two postions.
