    Spraying Under Hood Area

I've removed all of the old black textured paint (undercoating?) from the trunk area of my '68 911L SWT and I'm ready to respray. I know that Wurth SKS is probably the first choice, but I'm wondering if there is something almost as good that comes in a rattle can? The car is a #3 driver and it's OK to take a few liberties in the interest of expediency.

    Thanks for your input.

    Cheers,

John, you can get the Wurth stonegard in spray cans, you could also investigate some Eastwood aerosol products. It may have been a fluke, but a bodyshop used 3M undercoat on the underside of my hood and the paint just came off in sheets a few months later. The surface felt oily, no wonder paint wouldn't stick. Stripped it all off, used Wurth, primed it and painted it myself and it's still on 5 years later. Now if texture is important to you then I don't think you can get that with any of the aerosols. At least the ones I've tried. Just make sure that whatever you get is paintable, and I'd suggest always priming over the undercoat even though some instructions say it can be painted direct.

I stripped away some of the loose original undercoating from my 69.Some of it had sogtened-up over the years and I could scrape it with my fingernail.Fortunately, there wasn't any rust underneath.I applied 2 coats of POR 15 followed by the aerosol Wurth Body Schutz. The texture is not an exact match but it's pretty good.

    a word of caution>>>
the old SKS under the hood and under the car for that matter becomes softer and sticky to the point where it will neverdry if sprayed over with the new SKS stoneguard.
my gas tank was in great shape although discolored a bit. I decided to apply the SKS stoneguard undercoating and days later it had soften and blended with the old factory applied SKS.

I had to strip my tank down to the metal and start over

here's what the SKS stoneguard looks like on stripped tank. ...not quite as textured but good enough for me.

oh and the SKS is black, I painted it grey after it cured.
