    911 R Carburetor Help

Anyone have a pic of an original 911 R - I know that they are Weber 46 IDA's, but have heard that the finish on the R carbs is different than the finish on the later 906 carbs. Anyone know for sure?

    Appreciate the help.

    Weber finish for 911R

A strong guess is that since the "production run" of 911R's was made using the 1968 year chassis then the Webers were probably the straw yellow color. The prototype 911R's were probably not finished that way. The 906's were built in 1966 and at that time the Webers were aluminum color, as-cast. I'm currently working on a set of 46's that are unfinished and their serial numbers are #350 and #421.

I might add that the finish on the plated fasteners was probably the yellow chromate where the finish on those Webers prior to the 1967 build year were predominantly zinc (silver when fresh) without the yellow conversion coating.

    R Weber

These pictures are from an original R engine that was meticulously restored by Gordon Ledbetter. This R that carries this engine is not a prototype. It is numbered in the high single digits of the production run.

The Webers were restored by me. They were not media blasted and no abrasives were used on the finish. They are in their original silver/gray color. They are number 24 and 34. I know of 5 other R's, one prototype and 4 nonprototypes with the same Weber silver/gray.

I would not say with absolute certainty that all the R's had the silver/gray Webers but I am reasonably sure based on what I have seen. If you find an R today with the green/yellow Webers it is likely that they were replaced at some point.

This R engine is different from almost all the other R engines I looked at. The race shop often grabbed whatever was laying around and there were inconsistencies in race engine equipment. All the valve covers, chain cases and covers are 906 mag pieces. The engine hardware and most plated pieces were silver. The carbs were from Italy and hardware plating was usually yellow. Remember that any pieces that came from the race department like carbs or small fan were probably sitting around a while and would not fall into MY categories for coloring. Gordon

    Gordon,

    Nice engine!

The valve covers and the chain housings have a dull black finish. Is this paint or some other type of treatment?

    Thanks,
