    Installing a LSD?

I have a rebuilt 911/01 transaxle with an open diff waiting on the shelf for installation into my my 70E track car (old one has worn synchros)

All was lookign food, untill I got around to taking apart a core 70 911 transaxle and found a lsd unit in it

How difficult is it to swap out the open diff for the lsd unit?

    Thanks

Not hard...remove the ring on the open diff and swap with the ring on the LSD

    Installing a LSD?

I would strongly recommend a check of carrier bearing pre-load and ring gear backlash since swapping carriers may change those clearances.

I would recommend you send out that LSD for a rebuild. Gary Fairbanks in CT is a good choice if you're in the NY area. The friction discs wear out and it basically becomes and open diff. Very few of these have been rebuilt unless they've been in an active race car.

What ed says is correct. Don't forget ring bolts are different for LSD. Check LSD pre-load with a torque wrench like in the late model, drive flange to drive flange and not like in the early 911 books where they clamp the body in a vice and turn a drive flange. Good reading 15 to 30 lbs give or take on a 80%. There are however very likely broken pressure washers (undulated outer lamina) in a virgin LSD. Rebuilding these with 35 years experience is not so difficult. Gordon
