Wink S-UV 333 could it be....

I noticed that the 1965 slate grey 911 currently exhibited at the factory museum has the licence plate S-UV 333.

This is the same plate as the first 911 engaged at the 1965 Monte Carlo Rallye driven by Herbert Linge.

Although I believe the Monte car was Polo red, could it be the famous car restored by the factory back into a street car?

    Milou,

Appropriate for your posts number !!
I have sometimes wondered the same thing myself however I am a little further away than you to check this out !
Two details come to mind - is there still a hole in the roof for the light and why does the museum car have US front turn lights ??
Perhaps a kind nearby enthusiast could verify this for us ??

    Cheers,
    Dennis.

    Wink Restored?

Here is a pix of the Monte car in 1965:

Here is a pix of the grey 911 at the Museum:

To my knowledge S-UV 333 plates were not used on any other car. Photographs of the grey car from the early Eighties already show the same plates.

The car has no holes on the roof but could have been restored by the factory as it was pretty much customary at the time (RSR from the 1973 Targa, 917 painted in the 1970 Le Mans winning colors, etc...)

PS: I'm guessing this will be post #902!

    Museum 1965-66 car

I think someone will have to check the serial number on the gray car. It has been reported to be 302503, which would be a 1966 model car.

The Red car that ran at Monte Carlo in the winter of 1965 would have to have been a 1964 production. Peter Falk said it was a 1964 car and "it was fitted with Weber carburetors".

The factory has referred to the museum car as the "type" or "example", but in most write-ups that subtlety has been lost and the car is referred to as THE Monte car as in Betty Jo Turner's July 2008 Panorama story "Today Falk is driving the two-liter 1964 911 coupe that he and Linge drove in the Monte Carlo Rally in 1965" (Photo is of the grey museum car). Excellence magazine write up of that 2008 drive also made reference of the car as the Monte Carlo car.

There is in the Panorama archives a story of the USA guy who did the extensive rebuilt on the grey car and the factory offered a trade of a new production car for it. That would be car 302503.

But I could be wrong. I was not there and have not been to the factory.

    Bob,

I was thinking maybe the same thing. It would be great to have the serial number of the gray car in the museum for sure checked out.

    Wink Museum...

Went to the factory museum this weekend.

Couldn't check inside the car for the serial number, but looking closely at the car, it has the US lights and seems clearly restored.

I doubt it is the rally car but it is certainly the grey car photographed above with the added Monte accessories.

I'm guessing that since the factory didn't keep any of the early rally cars, they had no other choice but to use the grey one.

PS: Hans Hermann was at the museum and signed an autograph on a postcard showing "his" winning 917, a nice man.

Went to the Porsche Museum today and Dieter Landenberger, Director of the Museum archives, kindly confirmed that it is indeed the original 1965 Monte Carlo car.

It had been sold to the United States and was purchased back by the factory some years ago. It will eventually be restored to its original condition.

Found in may database (source ? maybe Porsche Panorama )
Bob Rasmussen of Niceville submitted this photo and wrote: "This photo was taken April 23 in the Porsche factory museum in Stuttgart, Germany. It is the reunion of myself and my first 911 after 25 years. The car is the 1965 Porsche 911 which I brought with me from Las Vegas to Stuttgart in 1981, and which the factory acquired from me for their museum in 1984. It has served as the factory's example of the first production model of their 911 series ever since." Bob was stationed in Germany and the PORSCHE Company wanted to buy his exemplary model of his 1965 911 for display in the Museum. It is the only 1965 911 with a rear window windshield wiper installed by the PORSCHE Factory as a custom order.

Re the back window wiper - I was under the impression the rear wiper was an option from day 1.
Perhaps someone with an accessories brochure from '64 or '65 can confirm or otherwise ??

    Cheers,
    Dennis.
