in many cities of europe the law required that you drive with just these lamps at night, instead of main beams. They did not want all the light "pollution" as the lighting on the streets, in towns, usually was enough to drive by. when you came to uncontrolled intersections a courteous high beam flash would warn traffic coming from the side directions
In the suburbs and outlying areas, you would turn on the main beams.

OK - Would they still be iluminated with the main beams? Didn't the headlights have the "city lamps" internally as found in H-1s?

Apparently not. Guess I'll just wire them to the same circuit as the city lights inside head lights.

    911R parking lights

    Don, Parking lights ?

Parking lights (the clear Hella units, between the orange turn signal unit and the oil cooler intake). The TdeF car has Cibie Iode units, and the BP car has Bosch H1 units

    911r wiring diagram

The TdeF poster and front end shot both show parking lights on and headlights on at the same time. This car used Cibie Iode units.

The BP Monza parabolic shot shows the Bosch H1 units on with the parking lights also on. The pit photo of the BP car, only the parking lights on.

Bosch H1 headlights come with or without city lights, and the Cibie Iode units have a mount on the main reflector for the city light, but are blocked with a small metal plug.

Thanks. The aftermarket front signal fillers have 2 bulbs in the turn signal. I had wired them up so that one bulb was the signal and the other is the "position" light that is on when the switch is in the park or headlight position. There are also city lights in the H4s wired in parrallel with thes second bulb (I mispoke earlier - my other car has H1s). So I will add the position lights, wire them in parallel to the city lights and parallel the two bulbs in each turn signal.
