    Pan Inspection With Borescope

    aka: "Journey to the Center of Bill's '68 Suspension Pan".

    For orientation, the borescope was inserted thru a rust hole on the left side (the suspension mount itself was solid and the pan had been replaced at some point). It continues through the box section between the front suspension T-bar pivot points. Note the leakage on the left side at the seam between the pan and tank support. There were some perforations inside the trunk here that were allowing the leakage. We also went up the left side of the tank but didn't video it.

    We think the little rust pile was debris from the leftside hole that worked its way into the box channel. The borescope pushed the pile down toward the rightside suspension mount toward the end of the video. The pan itself was actually quite solid.

    Cool! Reminds me of watching endoscopic surgery!

    It looks like the approach you took was through the sidewall of the trunk where the J-shaped conduit for the headlight wires comes in. Candidly, I'd much rather replace the pan than have to replace that section-- it's fairly hard to find because it's gone in so many cars.

    I sort of have the opposite problem-- some well-meaning soul actually used the tow hook to pull the car onto a flatbed. . . resulting in the towhook tearing out. The hook and associated parts are NLA and don't come welded onto the NOS factory pan I sourced, so it's a couple hours of fabrication to put them back.

    Its a good idea to use seam sealer at every open seam or BURY it with PVC undercoating to prevent future rust. The true rust hater will brush paint into the seams first.

    i can't watch the whole video, my connection is slow tonight, but ....
    FYI, it looks like the person who did the pan replacement
    did NOT do the mounting point reinforcement.
    that could be a problem.

    Do you have the stills from inside the left lateral support?

    Thanks for the sharp eyes, Bob. Hmm, I didn't notice that. I will have to look again. Is that something I can add if the lateral gas tank support is removed?

    bill,
    its under the gas tank support and is welded to the outer surface of the longitudinal. i don't think there's any way to do it but removing the tank support
