This happened a while ago, but what the heck. It's a cool bike:
"The supercharged Vincent Black Shadow sold at auction for $383,400 in October (2008?), just as the world economy was diving.

Yeah, I love Vincents too. Very innovative bikes. I couldn't afford one in the early '70s when I was in school and you could get a factory reconditioned one for around $1800, and now I really can't afford one.

"The Vincent in the Barn" Great Stories of Motorcycle Archaeolgy by Tom Cotter has short section where one of our own (Baron) has his collecting story told. Betcha didn't know he rode scooters before he was a race car driver?
One of the other stories in the book is about the supercharged Black Shadow replete with nice color photos.
All in all it's a nice book for your library.
Best,
Tom

Ah yes, a Black Shadow, what every Harley aspires to be in the presence of.
I saw one on the road many years back when I was still riding. Awesome machine.

One of my favorite songs, although it is about a Black Lightning

I took these last month at the Solvang Motorcycle Museum.
I believe this is THE Vincent Black Lightning that set a few speed records at Bonneville.

That may be a Vincent that set some speed records at Bonneville, but, I am pretty certain it is NOT the "Rollie Free" bike.
The real Rollie Free bike and Gunga Din were both at Pebble Beach this past summer. As a matter of fact, the owner of Vintage Seats did the restoration on Gunga Din.
You are 100% correct. I know the bike I posted set records, but it was not the Rollie Free bike as I incorrectly thought.
Bottom line is the damn thing looks like it'll eat your face and kill your next of kin if you try to ride it. Not my cup of lava java, that's for sure.

but I suspect the bike in Solvang might be one of Marty Dickerson's rides...
Dickerson lives in CA someplace (assuming he's still around...) as he has a Rapide that belongs to a buddy of mine sitting in his shop. Again, this could be past tense...as I haven't seen either the bike or the buddy for quite some time.
Yes...Vincents are so beyond cool...
cheers - and Happy Holidays to all
