I'm disassembling a pedal cluster in order to install new bronze bushings (and spiff things up a bit) and I'm having a hard time punching out the roll pin. I'm soaking it in Kroil overnight, but do I need to use heat?
Thanks,
JohnA

A smoke wrench will set you free.
GET THE TORCH!!
It'll make your life a whole lot easier. Oh, and hire a friend to hold the cluster while you hammer the pin.

Try a bigger hammer Turn the pedal arm around the shaft when removing it to avoid sticking.
Since I have to do this often, and hate causing injury to myself, I'm looking at making a tool to press it out. Starting with something like this Pitman arm puller with a V-block to hold the joint. Then modify the shaft into a pin tip to press the pin out.
Oh yeah, I hate to use heat indiscriminately since it can ruin the temper of some parts and/or cause other damage. I've not found heat to be useful in this instance. I recently took 10 clusters apart, and the real difficulty is holding the joint securely so that you can hammer the pin.

Just wait until you try and put the new pin in while keeping everything aligned. I think I used a similar diameter bolt to keep things aligned while I drove the new one in. maybe you can do the same to drive the old one out.

Here is a foto of a Park Tool USA crank arm press for R&R of older cheap crank arms with the taper pin. This is a Park Tool #B042 , don`t know if this is currently in production?........It will work!......Cliff

I brought the pedal cluster over to the shop I use and asked Jonathan there to help me. He said no problem. He secured the entire mechanism in a large vice and with a relatively small hammer punched the roll pin out easily. It appears that the key is to have things really secure before pounding on it.
Thanks for the help!
Cheers,
JohnA
