    Classic Adelaide 09 Wrap Up

    Day 1

    www.classicadelaide.com.au

43 degrees C. Whats that about 110F? Shall we say a little on the warm side when suited up with helmet on....

GT3 Porsche has a crash on the same corner I spun on last year.

Navigator and I get through the 1st day nerves and settle in.

Menglers Hill Down Stage out in the Barossa Valley (good wine country)cancelled early in the day.

Intercom starts crapping out towards the end of the day, which does not help.....Castambul Stage at the end of the day is shortened, so no fun going back down the hill at the end of the day which we had been looking forward to. We get through the stage with Dave yelling the pacenotes to me.

And then we get the news from Stewart & Alex Webster when we stop to fill up at the end of the day.....The catch up dinner is understandably very subdued.

    RIP Gary & David

Day 2 is much cooler around 28C or 80F

Heavy hearts as we walk past the flowers & wreaths in the 'paddock' as we walk to our car. Their car space was only a few away from ours. Heading out to the 1st stage - Coromandel all I can think about is the accident.

And then something clicks on the start line and we have a belter through the stage and get in a good rythym for the day.

We have the camera car behind us for the Wickhams Hill stage and I nearly spin on a 1 right. I need to edit the video to erase the F word right at the end.....

Intercom gets worse during the day and an emergency call to my parents is made to source another intercom.

The Monit Rally trip meter dies making a hard u-turn before lunch - cut the probe wire....

    Otherwise a good day!

Day 3 starts wet and cold.

The first stage is Montacute which is as slippery as hell as well as foggy at the top. The video clip is too long for Youtube at 12 minutes but we manage to hold off an Evo 9 4WD until about the last kilometer of the stage. Multiple cars off, including the GTR Nissan of Tony Quinn (winner of Targa Tasmania) which ends up in the bottom of a creek....

But the new intercom we fitted the night before works a treat! The repairs to the probe wire do not last long however......

The rain lifts mid morning thank goodness.

Teringie is the last stage in the day and is a new stage. Heres some footage - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ygv7GPF2Rxg

Does anyone know this car from California?

    Day 4

The run to get coffee and a croissant at 7am is not a happy one as it is pouring with rain again

By the time we get to the first stage of the day its lifted and the road is nearly dry. Here's Stage 1 on Day 4 - Mount Lofty Plus - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ygv7GPF2Rxg

Echunga flows well as does Macclesfield, and then on to Paris Creek Long - this year a little different with a reduced speed stage where you could average no more than 60kmh between the two points for about two and a half minutes. We nailed it and the stage felt great and pretty fast

The last three stages also went well with more competitor atrition along the way including a Purvis Eureka (VW powered fibreglass kit car) that didn't make the big right hander on the last stage of the day Windy Point - we went through two cars after them and I believe the stage was then closed....

The end of event street party was packed, time for a quick beer and then on to the black tie finale where we got our plate (navigator very impressed getting his 1st motorsport trophy!)

All in all a very challenging event and one we were proud to finish sucessfully- 10th in class.

Oh and then I buggered the paint of the left front guard pulling off stickers the next day

Awesome vid Cam. Nice job - both of you. I cannot believe that your navigator was able to find his spot again. Amazing. Now that looks like something I would like to do someday. Add it to the bucket list.

I was very sorry to hear of your fellow competitors - very sad for the families.

What is your camera setup? That really produces a nice picture and clear sound.

    Thanks Scott

Dave my navigator did a great job and it was his first time too! Not an easy job, and it really is a team effort that involves a lot of trust on both sides..

The camera is a POV-1 mounted on an I/O port roll cage mount. We experimented with the sound throughout the event, including plugging into the intercom but found that there was too much of my heavy breathing! The best sound came via a remote microphone clipped to Dave's helmet strap.

Apologies for the repetition in the photos above which I just noticed

    Heres a few more......
