SWB Foam Heater Hoses Engine Bay - clean up tips?

Can anyone chime in with advise on this matter?
Mine were orange (can just see it in places and on the inner) - now black, black, black! kinda shiny / crusty together..
I figure I need some sort of strong degreaser but don't want to damage the surface.
    TIA

If they're like mine it's like trying to clean meringue. They get pretty brittle. I found a can of orange spray paint that matched pretty well and lightly sprayed them. I tried not to over-do it in order to preserve authenticity and they came out looking pretty good. Putting them on is akin to brain surgery.

Yes, they easily turn to powder...
Years ago I tried to 'replicate' them using readily-available foam pipe-wrap painted orange-ish. I even tried wrapping the stuff around a piece of hose (I think '67 bug pre-heat hose). Both worked well, looked pretty close. Remember to use white 'zip-ties'.

I second the orange spray paint, build it up in light coats, chevy engine block orange is close to the original color
