    Polo Red & Paint Survey

Many of you have been following the restoration of my polo red 67S by Freddie Hernandez. So far I am very pleased with the work and attention to detail that he is paying to my car. He is very talented and takes the time to discuss with me his approach and reasoning and it's been quite a learning experience as well as a lot of fun.

Well now it's coming down to paint time and I want to solicit some feedback from board members. So I am looking to find your opinions on single-stage vs. two-stage and also interested in seeing pictures of your car painted polo red.

So, please post a pic of your polo red early 911 and tell me if it is painted single-stage or two-stage and why you prefer one over the other or if you don't know or don't even care - that's fine too. And even if you don't have a polo red early 911 but want to tell me which paint you prefer and why, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks! Josh

Here's my 68S I painted a few months ago with Restoration Shop basecoat/clearcoat. Then I wet sanded it with 1500 and polished it out.

    67 Polo

This 67S driver was painted in the mid 90s with two stage but we have no record of the paint manufacturer. It has held up well.

The engine lid was repainted last year with two stage Glassurit.

The Glassurit provided a good match but the painter says it needed a bit more blue than what the Glassurit formula specified for Polo.

Here is a pic of my former S which was painted with a 2 stage using BAF (i think) on an orginal formula. If you have the resources (money and a place to do it) go with a single stage.

Here is a photo of my 67 911 painted sometime in the 80's two stage. Overall it has held up well but does show some signs of checking but I still love it !

Ahhhh the sixties... I envision myself one early Saturday morning wearing plaid shorts, black shoes with white socks smoking a cigarette heading to the hardware store to buy a bag of nails.
SWB cars are an acquired taste however once acquired theirs no turning back.

Why do you make this caveat about single stage paint? Is it more expensive, and harder to paint? I would have thought not having to put on a clear coat would be easier...

The caveat would be durability and repairability. It probably would be cheaper though, and look more original.

FWIW I like a quality high solids single stage for the non - metallic colors like Polo red - I have used PPG concept for many years and like the system, the paint is not cheap, however I know the system and it is tolerant in so much as the environment does not have to be strict to make it work. For the current project ( a 71 E ) I am looking at shooting it in Glasurit 22 Line ( BASF appears to be "the" place for the real period Porsche colors) Cost of Glasurit is about 30% more than what PPG charges for Signal Orange ( PPG says they have the code and formulation in their system as well) .

On application - IMO 2- stage was created to address some production issues and I am not sure ultimate quality was a criteria. It is absolutely easier to shoot two stage metallic that single stage metallic (getting the metallic to float consistently in / through the clear is a real pain) it’s plenty durable and in some instances reworks are pretty easy if there is enough paint down on the surface. I have even spotted in single stage urethanes trackside with a pre-vale sprayer

On the question of ascetic and or period look - I think you have plenty of options with Single stages like concept and 22 line - You can take the paint in a couple of directions on final finish with things like gloss and depth I have included a couple of pictures of single stage paint to Illustrate -

Blue has less “gloss” than red even thought they are the same paint material – the difference is color and how the final finish was done. The silver is also different - they are both ppg concept but the size of metallic is different ( I had to re-shoot the blue car's bumper)

I don't mean to hijack this thread, but...George...nice car! I love the lotus 26R cars. I had to run agaist the ex-Jim Clark 26R at Monterey this year...boy is it fast.

So is the Gasurit 22 line pretty much available in all the Porsche colors? I too have been thinkng about doing some repaint.

I think the main thing about a Single Stage paint is that it leaves absolutely no room for flaws or defects in the body work, in other words the surface has to be perfect.
