    I am not Tom Sch, but I think that I know the answer, because I have something similar on my garage roof. It's to keep the snow on the roof from coming off in an avalanche, especially when opening the garage door. I think that it's more of a problem if you have a slate roof, like mine, or a tile roof.

    View from your garage

    Occasionally I have to turn around and look out the garage door. This morning it was 30F, cold and clear....nice view of the Skagit Valley and, in the distance, the sunrise hitting the Olympic mountains. Nice....ok, now back to work on the project.

    My Backyard Shop

    Photos of my backyard shop. Prior to this we had a metal office/warehouse building, this one was a long time coming and a lot of effort but it is so nice to have it so close to the back door! It was constructed in the style of the house in hopes that it may be of value to someone other than a garage junkie after I am gone.

    The view from the rear of the house followed by some interior views.

    I really like the floor. The moat must really reduce you insurance premimum! Nice
