    Hommage to Frere

One of my favourite pictures of early 911's is actually a series of 7 pictures in the Frere book (p.238 in my recent copy), produced by the factory in 1974 to show the close relationship between road and race cars - 2.7, Carrera, Safari, RS 3.0, RSR 3.0, RSR Turbo and Turbo. Here's an example:

    Attachment 76406

As the restoration of "Matilda", my 72S, enters the home stretch, we thought it might be fun to take the prepared components that are about to go into the car and try to reproduce this great image in color using high quality modern photography equipment.

The full-resolution photos are too big to post here - 300MB - but to see reduced versions of our work in progress, click on one of the links below:

    Full scene, as photographed

    Components only, as in Frere

Each link brings up the photo in a "viewer" frame. Using the controls at the bottom of the frame, you can zoom in to the picture until every detail is visible in 1:1 scale, and then move the zoomed crop around to view different parts of the picture.

When Matilda is finished, we'll take a side shot of the car - in front of an appropriate bush - as in the originals and complete the picture.

Wow! Very cool. The Frere pics are THE thing I remember from the book!

Very nice. Great picture of your components laid out. You'll need to blow that up and hang it on the garage wall where you'll keep that car.

That's awesome! I like the added touch of including the hood badge.

    Thanks for your positive feedback!

That was my thought exactly, to make a large print for my garage wall and for my mechanic's workshop. We have enough resolution to enlarge the picture to 12 feet by 8 feet in size in 35mm photo quality, so it could theoretically be larger than life (Early S Reg poster, maybe?)

It was a last minute idea to add the hood badge and the shift knob. It's not absolutely true to the original - Porsche were creating a technical picture and not a fan poster, but I couldn't resist. It's easier to take them out than to add them in later. Speaking of which: a friend asked me, 'Why don't you just photograph each piece separately and paste all them together in Photoshop?'. Well, when all is said and done, an original image with the proper perspective and lighting just can't be reproduced on a computer.

Considering that we didn't rent a professional studio with a full ceiling light banks and custom backdrops, I was pleased with the result. I'm looking forward to the full picture (and more importantly, finally finishing the car after 3 years!).

Coolest thing on this forum in 2009. Will a digital d/l be available?
