    Ash Tray Delete?

I would like to install a pre-69 one piece knee pad on my 69 911.

I installed (required drilling an extra hole) one from a 67' and everything looked good unitl I tried to open the glove box - the knee pad prevented it from opening. The one-peice knee pad fit flush against the lower dash while the 69 knee pads are slightly offset with a small gap between the pad and the lower dash metal. It appears this gap allows the glove box to open.

I posted this on the Pelican board and got a couple of responses that it had been done on 70 & 71 911's but no how-to info or suggestions.

Any help you can offer would be appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Frank

The number of holes (4) and spacing are the same on all longhood models.....ergo, no need to drill any additional holes. If anything, you might need a small round file to horizontally oval the holes in the dash a smidge......you've heard it a thousand times, I'm sure: "these were hand-built cars",.... and don't forget, in those years there were Stuttgart cars and there were Karman made 911s which might account for tiny dimensional differences.

Since I don't smoke ( and wouldn't light up in my 911 if I did ) I too felt that I wanted the clean look of a straight kneebar without the break in the middle for the ashtray. Found a straight one at EASY, stripped it, ( got rid of the horsehair which tends to absorb and hold moisture forever and used a very dense, hard, 1/2" thick foam rubber ) and had it powdercoated in satin black for eternal rust protection and re-upholstered to match the rest of the interior. Mounted it using flat washers and Nylock nuts.

No problems, no issues, glove comp. door opens as it should....don't know what to tell you other than it should work without any problem.

    (Incidentally mine is a '70 T).

Thanks John - do you know what year car your one-piece knee pad was pulled from? Did it have the chrome strip at the top edge when you got it?

    Frank,

I believe the boys at EASY pulled it from a '68. No, there was no chrome trim, just the black vinyl roll.

Attached a couple of quicky shots of my car this morning. Had to sneak out to get them since "she who must be obeyed" has every minute of my next two days accounted for. Forgive the condition of the car's interior....having new door panels made.

    Good Luck and Merry Christmas
