    Restore Pitted Headlight Lenses?

I've got a pair of original SWB Bosch headlight covers that are quite pitted. I purchased a pair of the cheap VW reproductions, which I may still use, but was wondering if anyone had any luck polising the pits out of glass. I've looked on line, and seen mixed results. These lenses are fine except for the pits, and my understanding is that you can't get originals anymore. Your thoughts appreciated!
