    Engine Air Filtration

    Guys

I'd appreciate your feedback on which way to go - I am just about to give my mechanic the go ahead to build by 2.3 ST motor.

At the moment I'm running ITG filters on my Webers with standard height manifolds and single phenolic spacers. The right filter (viewed from the rear) already touches the decklid grill.

I have tall PMO manifolds which will go on the new engine on top of the phenolic spacers which means I can't use the ITGs due to clearance issues.

I had K & N Watershields but took them off as they were breaking the double ended (threaded) bolts and I had also read the ITG's flow better and thus make more horespower.

I also have the original plastic airbox to suit webers.

I want this engine to breathe as well as it can but also want good filtration!

    Some questions:

    • Can you buy new alloy bolts for K&Ns?
    • Any way of making ITGs work with tall manifolds?
    • Any dramas running the stock airbox on an engine running to 8000RPM? Too limited in airflow?
    • Anyone running indivual 'sock' type filters on each carb throat? Plus grill mounted rainshields?
    • Any other good alternatives out there that I have missed?

Is good breathing and good filtration an impossible dream?

    Cheers

    Cam

    Cam,
ITGs for this engine are available in regular and short filter versions. However, regular velocity stacks (if any) will sit uncomfortably close to the top of the shallower filter housing. The shallower ITGs would probably clear under the deck lid. Go to the Coast Fabrication website and compare dimensions.

    Hope this helps.

Cam these might be to high K&N part # RD-0700 but they may make shorter.

    Thanks Guys

John - do you run watershields with those? Any issues in the rain?

Mark - interesting! how do they stay in place?

Sherwood - do the shorter ITGs give enough clearance over the intake trumpets?

I use regular hose clamps not shown. The base rubber on the K&N have a series of interior ridges that catch the top of the velocity stack horn VERY tightly and I have ran W/O any clamps on ocassion. If more clearance is needed I have wrapped the bottom of stack's with electrical tape and pushed filters all the way down then clamped. I'm quite sure I could come up with something a bit tricker but found no need. These filter's provide very good filtration

    Cam,
For Webers, what is enough? In my opinion, not enough.

The photo with the short ITG filters is running MFI. Unknown about the clearance. It looks tight. Maybe someone who knows can chime in.

Cam, I've never bothered with rain shields - even in our torrential downpours I haven't had an issue. It has to be A LOT of water down the spout for there to be problems...

Cut-down factory air cleaner, Factory SC/RS style! Allows you to use a K&N element (smaller diameter than the Mahle) and still get the benefit of intake pulses from the other stacks!
