    Vredestein Tire Sizing Question

I'm about to buy new tires for my '72, and have pretty much decided on a set of Vredestein Sprint Classics.

I've noticed that all of the websites that sell them offer the following sizes:

    185HR15's

    and

    185/70HR15's

Does anyone know what the difference between the two is, and why the 185HR15's cost about 20% more than the 185/70HR15's?

    thanks,

    Frank
    Cheers!

I think the 185HR15 is a 78-series tires and the 185/70HR15 is obviously a 70-series. The 185HR15 is taller and would would be the original size on a TR6, E-type, etc.

Absolutely- I've got around 2500 miles on them so far with no complaints.

I have put around 5k on a set. for the money a nice vintage style tire. not the best rain tire I have ever driven but not usually an issue. guess the next step up would be a Pirelli CN36 for about double or so the price and then on up to the Michellin XWX. Not sure about the Dunlop pricing. Not sure how they all compare in ride/handling/wear/rain etc..

Looking forward to having the Vredesteins mounted, and hoping they're as good as everyone says.

They'll be replacing a set of Michelin Pilot Exaltos that I bought 4.5 years and 28K miles ago. Overall, I've been very pleased with the Michelins. Nice tires, however, not the vintage look I'm after this time around.

I had a set of Vredestein Sprint Classics on a '64 356 coupe I used to own, but only drove on them for a couple hundred miles before selling the car to gentleman in Spain.
    Cheers!

I have about 6000 miles on a set and they work nicely - even on a 4 hour interstate run, all the way in a downpour with me anxious to get to where I was going.

I'm confused...and it wouldn't be the first time

I realize these are different years, but my '68 called for 165HR15s as the original size (yes, I put Vredestein Sprint Classics--original size, on my steelies--last summer...great tires IMHO).

So a 185HR15 seems like it would be really, really tall. Don't know what the original size was for a72, but I'd have to think a 185/70R15 is closer to the original diameter, right?

    165 x 0.78 = 128.7
    185 x 0.70 = 129.5
    185 x 0.78 = 144.3

The first two make a nice pairing. The first and third, not so much.

185/70 and 165/78 are original sizes.
