    Starter wiring help

Well it has been 5 years since I took my car apart and now I am in the home stretch to getting it together. A few things are surprising me that I don't know how they go together. This is a simple one I am somewhat embarrassed to as.

How do I know which are the positive and negative terminals on my starter.

This is a new Bosch starter and there are now + or - markings.

    Any advice would be great.

    Thanks in advance.

The red wire from the alternator is on the correct terminal, add the battery cable to the same terminal.

There is only a positive electrical terminal on the starter, the large threaded post on the right in your photo. Most electrical devices are grounded via their mounting on the metal engine or chassis. Some devices like the horn connect to chassis ground via a separate ground wire.

Both large threaded studs in the photo are positive electrical. The solenoid, the smaller cylindrical object mounted on the starter, completes the electrical connection when energized by the ignition switch.

The yellow wire is the source (control) wire from the switch that energizes the solenoid. It connects to the bladed solenoid terminal which might be labeled SW or the number 50 (same as on ign. switch). If your starter has two bladed terminals, try one, then the other.

For safety, you disconnected the battery ground cable prior to installing the starter connections, yes?

    Thanks Guys,

I jumped to the conclusion that the large cable that runs through the tunnel and connect to the starter was a negative line since it is in a black insulated cover. It is indeed positive.

It seems like I indeed just add it to the post that has the red wire that is shown in the picture.

No wonder I couldn't find anything in my manual

    Cheers
