What are the best tires for a 911S '73

    Hi,

    I'm looking for advice/experience with tires for a '73 911S.
I used to buy Yokohama A008s, but they are no longer available in the size I need (205/60-15). Is there any tire that you can recommend that comes close to the A008 in regards to performance characteristics ?

    Thanks much in advance

I use Yokohama Advan A048s. How many miles do you need out of them? Street or track?

Thanks for the recommendation - I'll check them out.

I just need them for street driving - don't do track (yet).

    Cheers

    Never mind

The Advans will wear out while you are just thinking of driving.

Wear rating is 60- yes- 60.

They sure grip well in the dry, though.

I am super happy with the Michelin XWX tires I put on my S. Great grip, no road noise and they look great. They are very expensive and given this the Vredestein tire is a better value for the money. They, too look reasonably period correct and have a good grip.

If you are just in need of a street tire you may want to check out the "BFG G-Force Sport" - they have it in the size you want

I changed up to 16" wheels due to the lack of good options for 15" wheels. When my car was new I used XWX's and CN36 (pirelli) and much preferred the CN36 which I think is also being reproduced now. The XWX was very good in the dry but was terrible in the wet. Very bad aquaplaning. The CN 36 was almost as good in the dry with more progressive breakaway and was, for the time, a very good in the wet.
I am now running Bridgestone RE-11's on 16" wheels. They are very good in both wet and dry.
Having a set of 16's is cheaper than buying reproduction XWX or cn 36's

There are some pretty good tires available in 195/65-15, which is closer to the original size, at very reasonable prices. I don't like the 205/50s or 205/60s on an early car, but many will disagree.
