    Chroming Prices

I just got a bid for chroming from Queen City in Seattle. They do concours level work - and charge concours level prices. I thought others might find the following pricing information interesting:

    For SWB's
    ----------
    o wing window base: $240.00
    o wing window frame: $180.00
    o wing window handles: $60.00
    o wing window hinges: $60.00
    o full window frame: $650.00
o upright window frame piece: $250.00
    o headlight rim: $155.00
o horn grilles for TTG lights: $500.00
    o quarter window hinges: $250.00

    Made my eyes bleed.

    Cheers,

John thanks for posting that info, It puts into perspective the cost of good used chrome. It also should be something to consider when pricing a car.

    John,
I've used Electrofinising, in Kent, WA., for yellow zinc plating of hardware. Great to work with and very nice results. They also do chrome. I have not used this particular service, but based on the other work they've done for me, I would recommend trying them out. (I'd at least get a quote......it's got to beat Queen City)

    Regards,

    Al

I took some brake calipers to Queen City for cad plating. Their quote was so outragous that I can only think they didn't want to mess with stuff off a lowly '66 911.

    Plan B was Dupli-Color caliper paint...looked great then...still looks great after 3 years. Price...$7.

Admittedly, my car isn't done to nearly the same standard as you guys'. But then, the money I didn't give Queen City bought me a complete set of ER PB bushings...that's how outrageous their quote was.

Al, Electrofinishing did all the chrome work on my '67. The results were very nice! They beat everyone elses prices but it certainly wasn't cheap.

    Rich,
Yes..I researched around a bit for chrome plating and the word is/was..Queen City does nice work,but...and it's a big butt...verrrrry proud of their work. Bend over proud! I think that you made the right decision... to move on.

    Chris,
That's good to hear. I ending up going to Electrofinishing, based on your recomendation re: Zinc plating. Turned out great. I'll definitely use them again....and now for chrome, also.

    John...give them a try.

John, Those prices are cheap compared to what I pay. What people don't understand is it's the prep work for each individual piece that cost $$. If you send out a rear quarter window latches that's all pitted, it will cost 3 or 4 times as much to re chrome it than if it was clean. The piece must be stripped, then restoration work on the piece, then copper plated, more finish work, then nickel plated, more finish work, and then chrome plated. I just paid $300 to get a pair of rear window latches done. And they weren't that bad.

Lisa and Darryl run a good show. I had them do a pair of very rare Moto Guzzi (early) Swan Neck handlebars for me last year. The price was reasonable and the work could not have been performed better or in a more timely fashion.
I've used a lot of chrome plating services including "Pauls" and this was hands down as good as I've seen. I was introduced to them by a buddy who is in the middle of a Vincent restoration. He's about at tight assed as they get and very difficult to please. If they make him happy I figure they must be doing something right. They apparently also have a source for pot metal chroming as well. FWIW; I had a pair of horn grills "halfway completed" by International Chromium in RI and ended up paying for the unfinished job. They can apparently do some wicked zinc and cad work but the chrome left a lot to be desired. I don't believe they had a clue how to handle pot metal.

I wanted a pair of 914 light housings chromed to use as driving lights on my 911. I shopped around and got some pretty high prices -- one of the steel housings had a fair amount of pitting.

I settled on La Habra Plating, where they did an excellent job and charged $60 for both housings and bezels.

Very happy with the work and the pricing.
