Thread: Front Hub Corrosion!

    Front Hub Corrosion!

Wow. I went to install front wheel bearings and found this. . . never seen corrosion like this before. Compare to a known good hub.

Ordinarily I'd just bead-blast it off, but this is the machined mating surface for the disc, I can just imagine imbalance problems resulting from a surface that's not true. I suppose I could chuck these up in a lathe and make a truing cut (that's what the Factory did to machine them, look at the marks in the good hub). . . or just source a good set.

Ed, how did you know these hubs saw action in the battle of Jutland? They will make great paper clip holders once the studs are pressed out . . .

I think I have a pair of SWB front hubs.

PM me if you need a pair.

That would throw your rotor off center in the caliper.

That is a great image of the fatigue/stress cracking that we may all need to be aware of. I would expect if you were you test these with magnetic particle (magnaflux), there would be other cracks not visible to the naked eye. This is also a good reason not to chock them up in a lathe and re-use them.

These really suffer from heat and galvanic corrosion. I think it is a good time to stock a spare set for a rainy day.
