** This has been answered in the other tread - thanks, Dave. **

I'm beginning the restoration of a '68 911L SWT. I'm curious about how many were built and it appears that I'm either reading the numbers wrong in the Red Book or there is an error.

Porsche used an eight digit VIN in 1968 and the model was designated by the fourth digit in the VIN. For example, I believe the VIN for the U.S. 911L SWT started with the numbers 1186xxxx, with number 6 indicating U.S. 911L Targa. However, the Red Book lists the following series for the U.S. 911L Targa:

11855001-11865134

which would add up to a production number of 5,134, which is what they have listed. This appears to be an awful lot of Softies for that era. It appears that the first number above might be a typo, as it has the number 5 in the fourth position, which was used to designate the European S Targas. Should it look like this?

11865001-11865134

which would add up to a production number of 134.

They sure seem rare when you try to source parts. Oddball year, but very interesting.

Thanks,
John Audette
