    Got a new watch today.

It belonged to my dad, who died last summer, and my mom gave it to me today. It's a Swiss mechanical movement from the late '40's/early '50's. I understand Heuer bought out Leonidas.

I wound it for the first time since the '60's about 5 hours ago and so far, it's keeping perfect time. The stopwatch works too. I'm thinking, take it in for a cleaning, throw on a nice brown leather strap, and calling it good. The flash picture makes it look much worse than it does in real life.

So sorry about your loss, Rich. I think it's a fantastic watch and you'll have memories of your father every time you wear it.

I have my grandfather's Omega and I think of him every time I put it on.

I wouldn't change a thing. It is a beautiful watch, with a meaningful past.

Beautiful watch, Rich, and the patina is fantastic. What a great piece to be passed from father to son. Here's a (very) short article about Heuer/Leodinas.

I enjoy seeing these old guys just as their years of service have left them; there's likely an interesting story behind every nick, scratch and discoloration.

I have this '41 Hanhart, and only wish that I knew its history.

Thanks for posting it - I love these old machines.

Tons of character in that watch Rich. And belonging to your dad, well, it couldn't be more meaningful which is even better. Congratz.

    Rich,

What a tremendous time piece. Considering its background, its memories, no new watch could ever hope to compete.

Very nice Rich. If you need a strap, I can highly recommend this guy:

That is great! I need to talk to my Uncle. He has his Dad's pocket-watch, and I have my fathers watch. They ought to be reunited one of these days.

One of the most shocking things that has ever happened to me was when my mother handed me Dad's watch a few minutes after he died. I just knew he was going to be buried with that watch. In fact I thought he should be. The fact that he had made it very clear to all of us that he wished to be cremated somehow never connected with the watch in my mind.

He had a Rolex day/date in gold that he wore with a cheap velcro band. (It's a long story, but it worked, and it suited him.) Last fall when I walked my youngest sister down the aisle I was wearing that watch, and I even found a velcro band that matched the bridesmaid dresses!
