    Hypothetical question on replacement vs. used original parts

    Let's say you were going to replace a front fender, hood, front control arm, steering rack, non-S bumper and chrome horn grill on a '70 911. What parts can be bought safely via places like Stoddard and what parts are better off sourced used?

    Hypothetical answer: EVERYTHING is better used unless its condition is so bad as to not meet the aesthetic standard of the car-- with one exception, and that is safety-related wear items. Balljoints, tie rod joints, suspension bushings, critical fasteners, etc. Ask yourself this question "will the failure of this part lead reasonably to grevious bodily harm, personal injury or property damage?" If the answer is YES then replace the part with new, concours and budget be damned.

    In the categories of parts you mention, however, in the absence of structural integrity issues, like rust in the control arm, a good, used part is often the best alternative in terms of fit. But it comes down to condition. . . .can you find front fenders used that are sufficiently rust-free that you will save time and money vs. the brand-new GRV version? Twenty hours spent reconditioning a used fender to standards where it can go on the car, well you can buy a new fender for that. Of course, the new fender will need to be fitted as well.
