    Help needed - 1972 911 radio removal

Need some help here. I have a 1972 911 and am trying to remove the radio (which appears to be a 1970s aftermarket) to install a vintage Blaupunkt Frankfurt. I have searched numerous threads, but everyone seems to be talking about a sleeve mount in a newer model 911.

This radio is mounted through a fixed face plate, with two holes for the stems (volume and tuning). I removed the nuts holding the stems to the faceplate, but cannot remove the radio because it will not pull back far enough - there is a welded bracket behind the dash (which the back of the radio is probably supposed to be secured to, but wasn't in the case of my radio).

What to do? Can I remove the face plate? - looks like it would be damaged if I pry it out. Can I remove the ashtray support (not clear how to do this).

Pics below and thanks in advance for any advice. Pete

I installed a Becker a few years ago and I didn't have any problem. I suspect that the bracket will be flexible so that it can be bent up for the removal. Good luck.

Edit, Come to think of it, my Becker is a DIN mount, so I removed the cover plate on the dash. Can't remember how I did it though. I think I slid the cover plate out to the right after opening the glove box. This requires the radio dials to be far enough back.

thanks. I can't think of anything other than bending that bracket in back or trying to carefully pry out the face plate. I won't be able to slide it to the right with those stems sticking out of it. frustrating

I have had my Blaupunkt in and out of my 72 a few times and it is really a straight forward operation. I'd suggest that you may have an alignment issue with the knob shafts and the dash that maybe hung up causing the rear bracket to appear as interfering more than it really is.

on my car, at least, i opened the glove box, carefully peeled back the dash facia covering the radio and the rest was a piece of cake. make sense?

It's out. That front radio panel comes off with a little wiggling after you take the shaft nuts off. The rest was a piece of cake. I was just all caught up thinking it had to come out from behind and that the metal panel was somehow fixed to the rest of the dash panel. Thanks.
