Cleaning up the SWB - paint here we come!

Many of you know the pickle I got myself into last year trying to get my car prepped for Treffen. Needless to say, trying to paint the night before a road trip is not advised!

After that debacle, I put the car aside for almost a year and let the pain subside. I have finally dug back into painting the car and have made a good start and want to share progress as I prep the car for Treffen this year.

First, some action shots from last year:

    Frantic activity:

Moments of reflection..."What the hell did I get myself into?"

And here we are today...I sanded the disasterously painted panels back down to the original paint. Looks like my evenings this week will be spent masking for primer.

    Kenik, or other SWB guru's,

are the taillight housings supposed to be body color or black? the front housings/ grill area are black, correct?

Black, just like the area under the rear decklid grill.

I had read this numerous times, then verified it using a soda blaster to peel back the layers of paint in the buckets on my car. The car had been resprayed once, so the paint come of in this order:

    1. Brown
    2. Primer
    3. Black
    4. Brown
    5. Primer
    6. Metal

This supports the belief that they were painted black at the factory after the color coat was put down.

As a side note, it is quite the task taking a car's second paint job back down to the original paint as the base coat. It is well worth it though, as you get a very, very nice surface to paint on top of and don't have the prep headaches of going all the way to the bare metal.

Kenik, I would consider that just a BIT more than a "cleanup".

I have no problem with the theory that all men are created equal.
