    brake upgrade recommendations..

    I just had a 3.2 installed in my 1972T.
    The power difference is amazing.
    Now the brakes feel inadequate.

Want something bolt on, without replacing struts.
Checked with Zuffenhaus and theirs require spacers.
I have 7R's with spacer on the rear with stock fender
and deep 6's on the front no spacer with early 911R
fender. Can't use a spacer in front due to clearance.

Any advice from the board guru's would be much appreciated.

Are you using S calipers now? That would be the easiest upgrade.

After that, you could get some higher-spec brake pads.

If you have fade issues, cooling and high-temp fluid is the way to go. Not as heavy as bigger rotors.

Of course, Aluminum, 4 piston 930 calipers are the best.

I wonder what Neunelfer will suggest?

930 brakes, with early hats and rotors. The rears need some machine work, but don't need spacers.

930's would be great. Not as good but way better than what you have if they are "M"s would be the 85-89 late Carrera "A" wide rotor and associated calipers.

Sorry James... I hate Carrera calipers and rotors. A full 18lbs. of un/semi-sprung weight and 10 of it in "rotating mass". The absolute worst place to add weight on a nice lightweight 911. I've "never" heard of an early 911 experiencing brake fade on a 20mm rotor in any circumstance other than very serious road course events. There's no need for a 24mm rotor in any of these early cars. That's my $.04 (adjusted for inflation and devalued for net worth).

I agree with Max. S-Calipers. Have you ever seen any of the HSR 911's at the track? These are some seriously beautiful and seriously powerful vintage 911 "Race" cars. All running S-Calipers. They do things with their cars that many of us wouldn't dream of doing (or have the opportunity to do) to our babies. No, I'm not buying the flex thing either.

    Weight:

    S-Calipers - 5lbs. 6oz.
    Carrera Calipers - 9lbs. 4oz.
    20mm rotor - 11lbs. 7oz.
    24mm rotor - 16lbs. 6oz

    Pistons:

    S-Caliper - 48mm
    Carrera Caliper - 48mm

    Pad Size:

    S-Caliper - #45T (thick for endurance)
Carrera - #45 (same but not as thick)

I think the best "brake upgrade" many people can make is an investment in a set of Porterfield R4S pads.

"If you can lock them up... your brakes have completed their end of the bargain."

Those are even "lighter" at 4lbs 6oz each! Same piston size and roughly the same pad size as the A-Caliper and S-Caliper!!

Just out of curiosity, what do the standard, finned, un-modified 930 Turbo calipers weigh? I realize it is not a totally fair comparison because the rotor weight must be taken into account too, and the 930 wants thicker rotors. The Turbo uses the floating rotors, though so you could save some weight with an Aluminum hat.

The S brakes are good enough for me, though I have always wanted to get rid of a bit of weight in the rear by finding some Aluminum replacements for the heavy M calipers.

BTW, Eric, my Dad says the R4S pads and fluid got to us yesterday.

I don't know the weight on the 930 calipers. Someone send me a bunch to weight!

Your rears are 6lbs. 2oz so you're only 12oz. heavier than the fronts.

That shipment seems to have taken way too long to get to you guys. Usually it's only a couple days.
