67 S copper surface fly wheel

Are there any real advantages of this fly wheel ? Are there issues in regard to compatibility with today`s pressure plate and clutch disc & availability of these parts new....Thanks ,Cliff

None that I'm aware of. Back in the early seventies when these were relatively common we always threw them away when it was time for a clutch and flywheel resurface. It doesn't seem to me that they got the mileage and life that the normal steel version had. I thought the reasoning behind the copper on the flywheel (and it was also on the pressure plate face) was to aid cooling, but don't take that as gospel. Since that was only done one year I guess Porsche wasn't too happy with it either.

Thanks for the comments Ed. There are a couple of them for sale here and there and was curious if they are worth the extra change to obtain one!Cliff....

In case it helps: I have some NOS copper faced pressure plates if one of these was needed these were 67-68 S only. Plus some NOS early friction plates.

both of the clutches 67S? in copper and 69S clutch with the sintered plated face, had aluminium centers and needed some kind of plating. the copper flywheel was probably just to match the clutch. the copper clutch used standard thickness disc, but the 69S clutch used a thinner disc because the plate was thicker. gordon
