S or L what is the correct answer...

    Hi All,
Friend of mine found a 1968 Targa, body is in great shape, underbody was already taken care of most bit's and pieces are there.
The guys is asking a sum for the car in that stage that we all now...complete car with gearboxes, engine, interior shot, rubber shot, glas ok....
    Here the facts
    1968 911 L Targa Sportomatic
    VIN 11855122
901/08 matching aluminum S engine and matching sportomatic transmission. sportomatic
barly rolling, underbody done, suspension has top be taken care of, engine has to be rebuilt, interior has to be done new,
So he wants to have some guideline, some assurance that what he is buying is worth it.
From my point of view an excellent starter for his first restoration as everything is there and he wants an early S.
From the facts that I know, was that Porsche had problems with emission in 1968 and imported 911 s labelt as L's as the engine is the correct 160PS Weber unit.
Can someone shed a bit of light onto this and give him the assurance that he is buying a rare car and what an gestimated value would be once completed.
He has a few other 911 and they are all very nice so I am sure this one will be close to concour once completed.....

Well, the engine and sporto combination are rare, but they do not match the vin. The vin is for a 911L Targa which came with either a 901/14 or 901/17 (sporto) motor. The S Targa series ended with vin 11850442.

One of only 134 911L Targa's for the US market, even more rare with Sportomatic.
Wrong engine for the car though. Can you get me the engine serial & build #'s please.

    A correct 68L sporto should have a 130 HP 901/07 engine not a 160 HP 901/08 sporto S engine.

I have no problem with the theory that all men are created equal.
But after that moment you are on your own and nobody owes you a damn thing.

Is this reference incorrect? It would indicate that this is a Karmann-bodied 1968 911S Targa:

The plot thickens. According to this 911L thread it should be a USA 911L targa.

    http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsc...1968-911l.html

There is also reference to an Excellence article:
"I saw the same article in Excellence and the scentance that says (there was also a US version of the 911L which was essentially the same as the 911S) "

It would be interesting to see the build sheet/CoA for this car.

S or L what is the correct answer...

Interesting combination here, all 911 L USA engines had a black fan housing and an air pump pulley driven from the left cam. This engine appears to have a red fan housing and I don't see an air pump pulley. Euro engine in US car?
