Thread: Spark plug wire options

    Spark plug wire options

So where would I find a good set of solid core black plug wires for a twin-plug set-up like was used by the factory on the race cars? I dont want big Red or Blue 9mm welding leads, just a set of high-quality black leads.

    Any suggestions or experience?

    TIA

Dave, I put Magnecor 8.5mm race wires in the hotrod. I was able to get them in black to retain the original appearance. IIRC they are solid core.

Thanks Scott. That will do in a pinch, but I would really like to find something more period correct in appearance. The originals were actually rather small diameter and shiny. Everything that is not cool nowadays

    Dave:

Magnecor makes a 7 mm wire called Electrosports 70 that is black and looks like original wires. I used them on the Kremer ST. Be sure to get them made long enough to route them the way you want. Stock lengths don't work.

    wires

Last year I had 10 original-style solid core wire sets (7 mm) made through my relationship with Moroso, complete with OEM plug tubes and original style hold-down clamps. Moroso makes ignition wire sets for many pro race teams and I thought it would be fun to start having them make original style sets in black with no markings for P cars, but in the end thought it best to leave that small market to Will at CSP. Having said that, I plan to sell the 5 remaining "normal" sets, and am willing to have twin-plug sets made if someone would donate a pattern set in correct lengths, to be returned when the production set is made. Contact me if interested. Sets would be made by Moroso's race dept where each wire termination is individually tested.

Gib, first off, great article in Excellence! Also, do you happen to have the length or info from when you ordered yours? I know that Dave and I both will be looking for a set. thanks, Mark

I buy bulk 7mm wire from Kingsbornewire.com or from Napa. Get plug connectors, boots and cap end terminations. Get some loom holders and make them yourself. The wire is not glossy like old wire but the results work. Gordon

I just bought a roll of Taylor 7mm, black jacket with no markings on it, dual-core so you can use it with MSD. Cost me like $60 for 100 feet, I figure I'm good for spark plug wires for the next 87 years or so.
