    Cool What is that noise?

I have a 2.2S and from time to time there is a tick noise that is apparent when coming to a idle rpm. It is random and seems to be getting louder. The engine has about 110,000 miles and has never been rebuilt. Does anybody ever have this type of noise from their engine? I wonder if it is the quality of the Gas we are using in California or is it a timing issue? Regards Chris Early S Reg.#205

    Chris,

Just make sure this noise is not the cam chains rattling against the end plates = Expensive if you have not done the mandatory chain tensioner update at some earlier time !

    Cheers,
    Dennis.

    engine noise

Thanks Dennis- the noise is not a rattle and I have updated the tensioners. It is more of a random pop or short duration tick. I am due for a rebuild so I am not that concerned. I have herd the noise for years off and on. Regards Chris Early S reg.#205

    How are your Throttle bodies?

I take it as a 2.2S never rebuilt that it is MFI.

It MAY be related to air leaks in your throttle bodies (especially at butterflies or shafts ) allowing a slight rough running and hesitation / misfire that is not quite random and is usually intermittent, if not bad, and can be best heard when at idle and with the engine warm - is after a run or a reasonable drive. In a way it is also related to timing as well as the leak(s) will probably not allow you to set the timing as advanced as the engine should be. This is all at the margin and will progressively get worse - ask me how I know!

the first thing I would check is the fit of the butterflies or any sloppiness in the linkages. It is not a terminal problem but sounds a little like a mechanical or metal on metal knocking accompanied by a slight hesitation or roughness of the idle.

    Wink engine noise

Thats IT! You nailed it Hugh !! A random pop ---sounds like metal to metal. The MFI pump was rebuilt at 33,000 miles mostly because the car sat for 18 years and was gone through to get back on the road. But the stacks were not touched and now at 110,000 miles plus; I am sucking air past the butterflies at idle with the high rpm that goes with the idle (1200 to 1400 rpm). What is strange--when I thrash and race around with pushing the up to the redline; come to a stop and the car idles perfectly at 1000 rpm. Anyway I just drive it now to keep the car healthy and not far until I can rebuild the engine and the MFI system. Thanks Chris Early S Reg.#205
