    WTB: Survivor 914-6

Longtime Porschephile hobbyist and driver. Not a dealer. My first Porsche was a 1970 914-6 and I would really like to find another. The closer to original the better. Sorry, not interested in conversions, abused orphans, or "project" cars.

Realistic about the market and cash buyer for the right vehicle, but I'm not desperate, either. I have a self-imposed budget. Yes, I know about the 916 Essen auction car. Nice little commuter ride, but a little out of my price range Other tips/leads or suggestions welcomed.

    Thanks in advance.

Hey: Thanks much for the lead. Looks like they have a '71 on the way. Also, relatively close (long day trip from Seattle) to me. I'll shoot them an email.

Seller responded promptly and we had quick and courteous email exchange. I didn't ask permission to post pics, so I won't. Asking $38K.

    The good:
    1) Appears very good condition. Reportedly under 100k miles.
    2) 1971s are relatively rare. I believe only around 500 made vs. 3000 in 1970.
    3) 2.7 engine ought to go like a cheetah with cayenne pepper on it's tooshie.

    The not-so:
    1) Not original engine or wheels. (I don't think the black cookie cutters pictured came until later ??).
    2) "Original color" (I read this to be "was repainted").

My question for group-think and this is just to promote discussion. I'm NOT trying to criticize or pick fight with seller: Is $38K unrealistic for a repainted non-COA 914-6 or am I unrealistic of current market conditions? I know 914's are a love 'em or hate 'em car. Personally, I love 'em.

As I pointed out - I recently repurchased a cherry, low-mileage 1971 'E with original paint for $30K. The seller is a PCA racer and no dummy about prices, so it's not like I stole it from him.

    Group feedback welcomed.

I may have one for you. 1971 914-6. Won it's class at the San Diego Parade. Original 2L six engine now a 2.5L. Approx. 800 miles since total rebuild and I mean total. Original Weber carbs were just taken off and are in Oregon for a complete rebuild. Should be back in about 2 weeks. Original interior. Irish green with black interior. PM me if you're interested.
I can tell you that it won't be a inexpensive purchase however, the car is pristine!

I thought you posted that you were looking for a 'survivor'?

Maybe I should ask 'from what'?

As long as they've been around, 914-6s have been subjected to just about every kind of cosmetic and serial mechanical abuse imaginable --- from 'GT' fenders and 'Chalon' body-kits up through all manner of Porsche 6-cyl (even Chevy 8-cyl!) engine 'upgrades.' And because they were kinda homely to begin with, more 'affordable,' most of them seem to have gotten an extra dose of 'performance' . . . as if to make up for their distinct lack of looks and pedigree. (Remember, we're talking about a 110hp 2-liter 'T' motor wrapped-up in Karmann-Ghia replacement contracted by VW. Be still my beating heart.)

So now, after 4 decades of upgrading --- born as much, it seems, out of insecurity as good taste --- finding a 'survivor' -6 now would be like bagging your high-school prom queen tonight.

    "No one's touched me --- I swear!"

This car has a '71 VIN (and you have checked this, right?), but just how much else has 'survived'?

For $38k, I'm sure the performance is there. But, a survivor? 'Cause without its original motor, wheels, paint, etc, this car sounds like its been 'touched.' Hard.

$38K seems a bit steep for a /6. There are 3 or 4 /6's for sale right now on 914world.com. Nice one's too.

Try Craig Laughlin at Camp914.com, he knows where more than a few /6's in the northwest are.

BTW I think the count for '71's is around 430 made. A neighbor of mine has one. He's been 'restoring' it for as long as I've lived here. Ten years and it still sits on the jackstands, untouched. I've asked and asked, but no sale.

    Good luck.

Pulled form a few sources...the listed Chasis Numbers for all 914-6 produced reflect the following numbers:

    1970...2668
    1971.....443
    1972.....240

    that totals 3351....
the usually listed total is 3360...
not sure were the other 9 went

also one on PCA's "the mart" likely in the next panorama.

    http://www.pca.org/Default.aspx?tabi...789&parentId=7

not sure if you can view it without PCA login.

car is in colorado, had a $25,000 drivetrain rebuild in 2001 and a $20,000 bare metal paint job in 2008, silver with black.

I know nothing about the car except I saw the ad while hunting for deals.
