Thread: 1973 S MFI "The Red Shroud"

1973 S MFI "The Red Shroud"

I'm trying to get information on what type of engine shroud would be associated with a '73S with MFI. My shroud that came with the car was tattered and the previous owner removed it and put an RS shroud on the engine.

I know the color is red and that's all I know.

I'm a perfectionist and true to the exact build of the car. I had a conversation with Damon from Series 900 in New Hampshire today about the proper shroud.

Is it a shroud with rivets or is it a shroud with the integrated (no rivets)?

Damon thought there were two types available and I'm thinking maybe so with the fact CIS was used in the same year as MFI.

Any help from you would be apprecaited before I spend the money having him make me one.

    Thx,

    Dave

Probably amber grey duct riveted on from the top of the shroud all the way to back of oil cooler.

    The short answer:

73 MFI shrouds are one year only ... sort of.

At a quick glance the early, red "S" shrouds appear to be the same as the later SC and Turbo shrouds but they have a few differences (CIS shrouds from 1973 will be a different color than the "S" shroud because they were only used on the 911T in that year). The most obvious differences are injector cutouts and the adjustment hole for MFI pump idle circuit. They also have small holes near #4 and #5 where the shroud bolts to the cam tower; the later shrouds have larger holes in those locations because of the special A/C washers.

You will see "casting marks" for the injector cutouts on an unmodified CIS shroud.

    Here's where things get fuzzy...

I have seen 73S engines that have a 71/72-style shroud (long, one-piece gray duct for the oil cooler). Were these early production engines? Were they original? I don't know 100% what the answer is, but I wouldn't put it past Porsche to use the 71/72 shrouds that were left on the parts shelf before they moved on to the later two-piece shroud (short, gray oil cooler duct cover).

To further complicate the matter, Porsche used the mechanical injection, red "S" shroud on the 1973 Carrera RS (911/83 engine) as well as the 1974 European Carrera (also a 911/83 engine).

The attached photo is of a 1971/72 and, I believe, a VERY early production 1973 911S fan shroud. Note injector cutouts and "extra" hole for MFI pump idle adjustment.

    Hi,

Marco is right in that I have the situation describe on several items, even body panels.
But virtually all 2.4S covers I have seen are this design: but with the additional cut out for the injector

    '73 S red shroud

My '73S coupe was built in December, 1972. It has the original fan shroud. It looks exactly like Chuck's shroud. Also, as stated previously, I believe the RS fan shroud is the same. If your shroud is not torn up you can restore it to the original look with a little work. Check this forum for the thread. As I recall, Chuck Miller details his method for doing this and it came out great.
