What is happening to these calipers?

I had these calipers cleaned and replated, they have been
in dry storage for approximately 12 months. When I took
them out... well see the pictures for yourself.

    What is going wrong here?

The back half does not seem to be showing the same effect.

Looks like the calipers were not properly cleaned before plating. The slightest amount of oil or moisture on the parent metal before being immersed in the plating bath will cause this.

    Agree.

There are steps to the plating process. If they do not stay in one bath long enought the chemicals are no completely washed and, this is what happened. Sorry for the lack of technical talk on this but, it was explained to me by my plater and I don't remember all of the terms.

Bottom line is what Steve stated they weren't cleaned properly before hitting the final yellow dichromate bath.

It happens occasionally so your plater should take it back not questions asked. We usually take some back from a batch.
