This is a very unique and special early 911S. The current owner of this car is a well-known early 911 enthusiast out here on the west coast. He has a reputation for having very nice cars and spending the necessary money to restore these cars properly. He purchased this car a few years ago from a local man who was the 4th owner. The current owner did some research to track down the history of this car.

The car was originally sold new to a Surgeon in Illinois. He purchased the car from a Porsche dealer in Chicago. He owned the car for 10 years. We do not have any information on the 2nd owner. The third owner was from San Francisco and purchased the car with the thought of using it for vintage racing (I know, it is painful to hear). Fortunately, he realized it was too nice and original of a car to use for that and after some time sold it to the 4th owner.

The mileage is original and when the engine was being rebuilt, the condition of the bearings, crank, and other internal bits confirmed this.

The current owner’s intention with this car was not to make it a PCA concours car, but rather a very nice example that would be true to original as well as being reliable to take on long drives and simply enjoy. Because the condition of the original trim, interior, and other bits and pieces was in such good shape, his goal was to retain as much originality as possible to help preserve the car’s history.

Although the car ran great, it did have a bit of smoke on startup, so his first step was to do a simple valve job and tighten things up. Well, nearly $25,000 later (we all know that slippery slope), everything mechanical had been completely redone. Also, he enhanced the reliability with correct and better parts when he could. The engine builder will warranty all the work he performed for up to one year or 12,000 miles (whichever comes first). The car needs to be delivered to him to have the warranty work honored. Here is an outline of the mechanical restoration:

    Engine:
    Complete engine rebuild.
Crank was perfect and was only polished
All bearings were perfect when the motor was opened (to verify mileage)
    New valves
    New bearings and custom rings
    Honed cylinders
    930 chain tensioners
    New upgraded oil pump
    Webers completely rebuilt
Fan is original magnesium and was polished when cleaning, but will fade back to original finish
New timing chains, rocker arms and shafts
    New motor mounts
    SSI Stainless Steel Heat Exchangers

    Tranny:
Transmission completely rebuilt with all new factory gears with a shorten 3rd, 4th, and 5th (A=1st, F=2nd, K=3rd, Q=4th, V=5th). Not quite airport gears, but certainly more fun drive with top speed at 125mph
New clutch, pressure plate, throw out bearing, and resurfaced flywheel

    Suspension and Brakes:
    New Koni shocks
Completely rebuilt suspension with correctly powder coated parts
    All new bushings
    New factory axles.
    Brakes restored (rebuilt calipers),
    New brake lines
    New Turbo tie-rods

Since the drive train was completely out, the next step was to do the paint. When the current owner purchased the car, it had been repainted white some 20+ years prior. After researching the car, he came to find out that the original color was Bahama Yellow (one of his favorite). So, this was a must for him. When they took the windshield out of the car and pulled back the seals on the A-pillar, they found the original paint as it left the factory and had never seen the light of day. So, they had a representative from Glasurit come out and custom blend the color to get the exact correct shade. Best of Show Coachworks near San Diego, CA was hired to do the paintwork. They are known for some amazing Pebble Beach Concours winning cars and treat every job that way. Needless to say, nearly $50,000 was spent on the body. Best of Show will warranty their work for up to one year. They carefully removed all the trim and glass to preserve it. Here is a detail of the bodywork performed:

    Body:
Stripped down and to bare metal
Soda blasted on the bottom and fender wells
Hand stripped on top to bare metal
Glasurit Paint matched at Glasurit Library and custom mixed to ensure exact match to original paint found behind Windshield molding on A-pillar.
    Excellent Gaps
    Exterior rubber/gaskets was replaced.
Original bumper/deco rubber/molding kept for originality purposes.
    Grill is original and unrestored.
NOS complete headlight assembly correct for 1967
Badges are all original and unrestored.
Stainless Targa Bar is all original and not restored.
    Wing windows rechromed.
    New Windshield
    Rest of glass is original
    New trunk and door moldings
New Targa bar and Targa top seals replaced with correct seals
Wheels are original to the car and refinished correctly by Harvey Weidman with 5 brand new 165 15 HR Vredestein tires installed.
Windshield wiper reservoir was cracked and we couldn’t locate an original one but have included a later one that would need to be modified to fit.
Fog lights are original and unrestored. They do not work.
    Original door handles
    Original side mirror

The final step to the process was the interior. Now remember, the goal here was to not make a concours car but a very nice car that could be enjoyed and easily brought up to concours level at a later date. We discussed the interior at length and finally decided to keep it mostly original. It really tells the story of the car and shows that the car was really well cared for its entire life. Since it is the part most owners really experience the most about the car, we loved the original look at feel of it while driving. The only significant element that was done on the interior was the carpet. Here is a list of the details:

    Interior:
    Mostly original to preserve authenticity.
The vinyl around the windshield and inside of the roll bar was redone by Autos as well as a complete carpet set.
The door tops were done to original spec.
    Sun visors original
The dash, radio (which does not work), door panels and knee pad all original and unrestored
Gauges are original and were restored.
    New correct antenna
Original soft window targa boot is original with the carry case
Original Interior Tonneau cover included (no snaps installed).
Original jack and original complete toolkit.
    Extended hub steering wheel
Webasto heater included but not installed
    NOS Rear view mirror
New correct seatbelts installed with original seatbelts included
Also, we have a NOS (and very rare) headliner for the targa top if someone wants to restore it in the future.

    Factory Options:
    Webasto Heater
    Antenna
    Loudspeaker
    Tinted Windshield & Side Glass
    2 Pair of Seatbelts
    Dunlop Tires (165/15)

Finally, included with this 911S are some great additional items:

    Original factory Shop Repair Manual
    Original factory Shop Service Manual
Complete set of Blaupunkt radio manuals and wiring guides
    Porsche distributor and dealer pamphlet
Porsche Targa supplemental/annex manual plus one near new extra
Original Porsche Service Book with dealer stamps
    Original Porsche Accessories Book
Two Original Porsche 911S Owners manuals (one published in 1966 and one published in 1967)

All the owners of this Porsche were true enthusiasts and created a large binder with any press information pertaining to the 1967 911S. Many of these items date back to 1967 and are a great story of the vehicle from being tested as a new car to impressions as a classic collector car.

We have all the receipts from the current restoration work. Best of Show will also be providing a CD photo documenting the paint and bodywork.

As a fellow 67S softie owner, and having another 67S soft window car "in paint process" right now, I know what's involved.

Car looks beautiful, and I talked to the owner at length about the car. Fairly priced based on the looks, process, and the final product. I know of another 67S soft window that recently sold (not mine) and was near this car in pricing, but wasn't done to the level of this bahama car.

Great color, and should make someone very happy.

    cheers
    Eric

Thanks everyone for the kudos. I agree...I enjoy looking at it and it has been even more fun breaking in the motor. It will be sad to see it go.

... Car is too cheap and I liked it better in white ... just kidding ...

By coincidence, I drove behind it last Friday and it absolutely looks stunning - I had to significantly speed up in my Alfa to catch Paul driving the softie. The stance of the car on its 165 tires looks absolutely perfect and the color is very cool.

Hope to see it at cars and coffee on Sat.

Yes, some of the photos came out looking signal yellow in the bright sun. We plan on rephotographing the car in overcast weather. If you read the description, they went to great lengths with the people from Glasurit to get the right color. I think the best description of the car is school bus yellow...very close.

This car is probably a high #2 car, and we all know the difference between a #1 car and a #2 car can be significant both in terms of cost to get it to #1 shape (details details...), and certainly the street price of both is usually pretty significant as well.

There's no question this is a high end car, but by admission they maintained a high driver level in the restoration.

So, as you say, the distinction in price is somewhat notable, but certainly the difference in the car's is as such as well. That being said, this car is so nice that I would refuse to drive it... just as I have done with a couple of other cars that I have owned in the past. But it should be!

    cheers,
