    WTB 70, 911E Radio

    Are original radios available or do I look for after market replicas?

    Don't seem to bring much up on searches, anyone have a source?

    Thanks,
    Bud

    I think that there's a long line of people looking for these. The original radios all got torn out in the heyday of the independent "audio" shops. Now, everyone wants to restore their cars to original, and the correct radios (especially in operating condition, with all the mounting hardware) are scarce.

    Blaupunkt Frankfurt

    From time to time these radios come up on Pelican for between $250 and $500 depending on condition. In my experience they all require some level of investment if you want it to function properly. Alternatively a premium can be paid from oldautoradio.com. They are expensive but the radio comes with a lifetime guarantee and can be outfitted with an IPOD connection for a few more bucks.

    Good luck.

    Bud,

    There are a few sources on the web that have them, but they are pricey and may not be in the U.S. If I recall correctly, there were 6 Blaupunkt and 5 Becker radio options for the early cars. I've got a 69 and a 71 and am not sure how to find out which radio they came with other than purchasing the very pricey Certificate of Authenticity from Porsche.

    Here are a few sellers/stores I bookmarked for when I decide to spend some money. Ebay is always a good place to keep an eye on and www.thesamba.com (I have no affiliation with these sites and no nothing about their authenticity or reliability):

    Don't think they are that hard to find, especially the Blaupunkt Frankfurt. Good, working used ones should be around $250.

    I also bought funky stuff from oldautoradio (Needed an extra wide all chrome face plate for an Alfa - The radio behind was not that important but turned out to be a really good vintage Blaupunkt as well :-). Very pleasant to deal with, given that he operates it out of the Canary Islands ...

    I paid $350 for a Blaupunkt Frankfurt US one a few weeks ago, was operational (have not tested it yet) but has a stuck tone knob.
    Now selling my ROW Blauwpunkt Frankfurt, fully functional, with all knobs, bezel, mounting stuff for the same price here:

    Prepaired to give a 3 months warranty on it, since it was repaired and serviced.

    For anyone that needs to install a radio, here is a copy of the original blaupunkt installation instruction, that comes with an installation kit.

    For the radio cover plate, I made a thin steel plate that covers the entire section of the Alu-facia nect to the steeringwheel and had it recovered with the same leather as the rest of the interior (pictured below). This will give a nice smooth look with the flush mounted radio with the original Porsche chrome dial facia. (that is different from the generic chrome dial facia that blaupunkt used, both pictured below). A new installtion kit is very rare and contains mounting hardware and speaker. (I had to pay $300 just for that, pictured below)

    Also for repairs and operation
    -> scanned manuals:

    -> electric schemas:

    -> sales brochures, with prices (even then they were really expensive!):
