Inching up on Repaint, question about rocker area

Above says it all. Car is a 74 but without the extra rocker panel added that year. So the body curves under toward the ground like the earlier cars. Someone put Wurth undercoat at the very bottom edge on my car, you can see in this pic. Maybe it's original, though I don't think so. It seems like a practical way to deal with future road rash in that area. But I've seen lots of cars painted normally there (without undercoat) and they don't seem to be covered with rock chips. And mine doesn't look like it has sustained any damage. Can others confirm that's the case? i.e., if I just repaint normally, without undercoat along the lower edge, will that paint hold up well over time?

That undercoat is original. Looks exactly like my 72.

Undercoat should be there under the deco/rocker trim. You can remove it but it won't be factory at that point. Lightweight factory cars wouldn't have that but a regular 74 I believe would.
