Heating and Ventilation controls - HELP !

.....in a 1969 911E . I have 3 levers centre of dashboard , as pictured in my handbook. Unfortunately the hand book only talks about the operation of the top and middle levers...

Top (lever1 say) is cold air control with increasing fan settings as move from L to R....works fine

Middle ( lever2) is distribution of air between upper and lower outlets , go from all lower to all upper as move from L to R....

Bottom (lever3 with what looks like a round brown wooden end knob , whereas levers 1 and 2 have round black plastic end knobs) shares same symbols at L and R ends of its travel as the middle lever. It will move BUT is extremely stiff to move so I dont want to force it without understanding its purpose !!!

PS no auxiliary heater fitted , and the usual heater lever by side of handbrake is present and works fine.

    heat lever

the bottom of the three levers directs the heat up or down. the heat volume is controled by the lever by hand brake. the cable instalation and adjustment at control valves is not easy. Gordon

In an attempt to answer my question I came across this old thread. My question is the same as the Original Poster's. What is the function of the three levers that make up the heater/ventilation controls/

I know what the top lever is for, but unclear about the bottom two?

My 1970 T Owner's Manual is ambiguous. It states on page 30 under "Distribution of heating", that the lower lever controls the direction of air, either up or down.

The Manual then states on page 31 under "Ventilating Systems" that the middle lever controls the direction of air, either up or down.

Please let me know what the middle and lower levers are for.

BTW: My car is not equipped with an auxilary heater

    Thank you

The top lever (with a black knob) opens up the fresh air vents and controls the speed of the vent fan under the cowl.
The middle lever (with a black knob) controls the direction of the fresh air. All the way to the left is "down" or to your feet, all the way to the right is toward the windshield.
The bottom lever (with a red knob) controls the direction of the heat (when you pull the lever on the floor between the seats). All the way to the left is at your feet. All the way to the right is "defrost" or heat to the windshield. It has nothing to do with the amount of heat or off or on. It is simply there to direct heat and does just the same thing as the middle lever does with cold air.
I hope I haven't made things more confusing.

    Regards

    Jim

    Thanks Jim.

Does that mean that the fan controlled by the first lever, only boosts the speed of fresh air from the cowl and not hot air from the engine?

Correct. It only deals with fresh air. The top two black levers have nothing to do with heat.
