    ATTN: Hard Core Computer Geeks...

    Guys,
I'm in need of some assistance from the computer geeks among us...

One of my external hard drives has taken a dump...
It's not making any nasty, mechanical noises, or anything other than a short hum and a beep on startup and then nothing...

I'm guessing I can recover the data off of this - assuming I can find the right guy to do it. Up here on Mars, that's laughable.
Any of you have any ideas, or suggestions where I could take this thing? or...if anyone has a way to do this at home - I'm listening. However, I understand this to be a pretty delicate, specialized process...therefore happy to hire a pro.

Driving south to anywhere in L.A. is not a stretch (PITA yes, stretch, no...)

The unit itself is a Western digital external HD encased in one of those plastic cases to sorta resemble a book - I can't remember how big it is - I think 500mb
I had it hooked up to a Mac Pro via a USB line.

    Anyone? any ideas?
    Thanks, i appreciate this
    Cheers
    r/Thom

BTW - I just installed 2 additional 1TB internal drives in my Mac pro...I really don't want to go through this HD failure scenario again...

Google for "data recovery services", there are plenty of places which
will attempt to recover your data. It will not be cheap.

Get yourself a Backblaze of Mozy account, I use Backblaze and I'm very
happy with it. These online backup services will protect you in the future
if your computer is stolen or lost in a fire.

Two drives are better but without geographic redundancy you are still at risk
    of losing everything.
