Robin Hood Rally, aka Death Race 2010

So has anyone been following this? RHR is a reality TV show that is now filming. It consists of Targa-style closed-public road rally stages, flat-out, fastest time wins. They move around the country and have several events. Overall winner wins a new Ferrari!

    So far, so good, right?

Just what would one need to do to enter RHR you ask .....

    1. Have a car with or without a roll cage - your choice.
    2. Have a car with or without a safety harness - your choice.
    3. Have a car with or without a fire extinguisher/suppression system - your choice.
    4. Don't wear "flips-flops" for driving shoes - the organizers felt this was important enough to call out to the caliber of participant they expected
    5. Have a "reliable and sporty vehicle".
    6. Have "some reasonable driver skill." What the hell does that mean?

If you have all of the above, you are now qualified to go flat-out on the public road courses they lay out

In the first event, a participant wrapped his new BMW around a power pole and was airlifted to a hospital.

In last Sat's event, a participant in a 450-HP Corvette lost control (hmmm, 450HP, 2WD on a bumpy, crowned public road with "some reasonable driver skill" behind the wheel ...) at a finish area which the organizers thought would also be a good place to stage EMS and Fire personel (in the EZ up tents) as well as competitor vehicles and spectators about 10 feet off the racing line. By sheer luck, no one but the driver and a parked BMW M3 was injured! Check this video:

This is a total abortion. There are no recognized sanctioning bodies involved and nobody with any rally experience. Someone will be killed before this series is over. Sponsors are starting to bailout. Intercity Transport bailed today. If ever there was a hope to get a Targa-style rally in the United States some day, this will put an end to any hope.

It is supposed to air on Versus.

Buy a SmartCar. Drive the speed limit. Be the only survivor. Win the Ferrari.

Curt, I agree. This is the kind of stuff which can easily ruin any chances we have as "motoring enthusiasts".

Well, there is always Targa Newfoundland and Targa Tazmania.

I will be watching out for the RHRR. I suspect they might have their eye on Mulholland Highway. I dont think California/CHP will let them run, though.

I wouldn't be surprised. These maps from their website show routes that "may" be included. Yeah, they're going to close the Pacific Coast Highway from Santa Barbara to Monterey to let these morons race. Not gonna happen. Deal's Gap? That must be for the episode where they see how many dozen Corvettes they can wreck in a single event.

They can and do close sections of Mulholland movie filming ($$$$) but PCH is way to much of a major road. All the uber-rich people would be pissed that they cannot get to their Malibu beach houses in their Bentleys.

They also use those roads for the Amgen Tour of California bicycle race.

How is it in this day and age these guys are allowed to run a speed event with absolutely no thought of competitors or spectators safety?

Abortion is right Curt. This sort of thing gives motorsport a bad name.

Hard to tell if the guy filming the YouTube flick was filming the accident's aftermath or that girl-in-the-white-shorts' butt. Was also good to see that the flagger had the presence of mind to wave the checkered flag a minute or so later.

I think you mean it is an abhorring event and an aberration. Abortion is a whole other issue, for off topic.

I specifically mean 'abortion'. It has more than 1 definition. In any case, the producers have banned spectators from future events realizing that they almost wiped out a few dozen last time. That particular 'stage' with the Corvette pirouetting across the finish line and into the crowd was an up & back layout. Start line, finish line, staged cars, spectators, EMS, scoring all clustered in the same small area. Again, there are no sanctioning bodies involved in this and nobody with any rally experience. Motor Trend magazine is one of the sponsors and is continuing on with full knowledge of what is happening
