Right spare tire for 70S ?

    Hi,

What are the right, period correct spare tires, factory delivered, for a 1970S ?

Was there a difference from USA to Europe ?

    I have a Pirelli Centurato P3, 185/70SR15 is this OK ?

    Thanks
    JD

    '70 'S' Spare

I don't know if it was original but my Euro 'S' came with a Michelin XWX . . . and a tube.

    Regarding the Pirelli P3 . . . .

    . . . . I believe that the tire dates to the late-70s-early 80s.

Also, while the 185/70R15 tire size is correct, the 'S' speed rating means the tire is only good for 112 MPH/180 KPH --- well below the 'S's top speed.

Ideally, you'll wanna fit 'V' rated tires, good for 150+ MPH . . . or just remember not to drive fast.

The 'vintage' Michelin is actually still available:

    . . . . but, oh --- the price

Also check 'Vredestein' in the archives.

    JD,
The original wheels were 6" deep six Fuchs.
The original tyres would have been Michelin XVRs(subsequently called XWXs) in 185/70 15 VR.Some Ss in the home market could have had Dunlop SPs but I am not aware that Dunlop had any tyres in that speed rating in those days.
If you have a show car then these Michelins are what you should have on it.
I believe the P3s are from the late '70s/early 80s.
If the date on the tyre is more than 5 years old, then throw it out as it will not be safe as well as not the correct speed rating whether it is a spare or not.
Check out some of the threads on this site for the best tyre brand in your area but remember you should have a V speed rated tyre.
Also remember if you have a tyre failure related insurance claim, then they may not look at you favourably if you have the incorrectly rated tyres.

    Dennis.

    As things turned-out --- my car's Kardex specified Pirelli . . .

Anyone know what the Pirelli tires of the period would bewere

    CN36? . . .

    . . . or were those later?

What else were they selling/making circa-1970
