    Service

1059 was serviced @TLG before I went to RRIV. The details:

This was a major service --- adj valves, repl plugs, chg engine oil/filter+air filter, drain/re-fill trans, adj MFI linkages, clean MFI pre-heater, chk/adj timing/mixture. Included also was a general inspection --- brakes, bearings, suspension, tires.

Some other stuff. One of the brake bleeders was leaking so that got replaced. Plug wires were re-routed. New headlight bulbs. And rotation and balance.

Marco also spent a good chunk of time re-setting the entire MFI --- from the throttle plates back.

    Parts = $236
    Labor+etc = $925

Marco also gave a list of things that will need attention:
    1) Oil hose (suction) on the oil tank needs replacement
    2) MFI pump-drive seal is leaking
    3) Rear-main seal is seeping
    4) Worn throttle rod needs replacing
    5) Pass-side horn wiring (the one behind the cooler) is faulty
    6) The Bowden tube is wearing into the side-cover of the trans and needs to be bushed
    7) The KONIs are toast

Nothing fatal --- at least, immediately ---- and the leaks I can live with, but . . . the rear-main is an engine-out deal.

I’m not crazy about the KONIs, but switching to Bilsteins requires changing struts so the KONIs ’ll go back in.

Interesting note. 1059’s had this funny little shimmy since I’ve owned ‘er --- feels like its at the front, comes on at ~3100 in 5th, then goes away. I thought it might be a thrown weight, run-out, something. But everything looked fine to the Balancer so Marco suspects the shocks.

He also suspects that the tach may be off --- like 1k. (!) All the other instruments need some love, too, so . . . hello North Hollywood Speedometer.

Anyway, thanks to Marco, 1059 runs better. Still easy to start, idles well, some light pumfing warming-up, but better-settled-down now running up to/past 3000 RPM, then smoother up+beyond. Highway MPG to RRIV was 21-22 MPG. No speedo/odo since then --- MapQuesting my miles, for now --- but I figure we’re still managing 17-19 MPG City/Hwy.

    Rick

PS >800 miles since RRIV . . . car just won't get dirty. (Esposito force-field)

    Restored Early Scheel

The early Scheel came back from Gerrit @NML Depot, last Friday . . . no one was around, so it was delivered next door. I found out last night, ran by this AM, took these pics . . .

    More Restored Early Scheel . . .

Lot of contouring on the underside.

    Also, Uli's right . . . super light. No figures, yet . . . but just the rails feel heavier . . .

    Add-on Head-rest

An odd bit, that Gerrit had, and I took up . . . funky

New cloth w/ vintage vinyl, all covers zipperred? Head-rest adjusts in what feels like a light-weight square-section alu? frame --- didn't think to remove it so . . . later

    Feels sturdy, purpose-built . . . Scheel only?

    Scheel Sliders

This seat, that I bought from Uli (uai), was a good choice --- price-wise and period-correct. I would've loved to've left everything alone but the seat needed work. And Gerrit was close-by, available, more than capable.

    Everything's turned-out (so far) --- but even if the seat was toast, or I didn't fit --- and I do (I checked) . . . I would still be thrilled . . .

    These sliders . . . .

    . . . and unrestored . . .

Krusty, but not much wear . . . . and feel sturdy, especially the latch

Compare to the Recaro slider . . .

    Chosen

My Daily Driver’s coming-up on 200k miles, and so, after 20-years of dutiful service (including 5 semi-hysterical ones with me), the inevitable wear/tear/indignities of (tooth-and-nail) commuting, solar exposure, parking lots, plus getting bumped in the a$$ by a twenty-something ding-a-ling, couple weeks back, meant? . . . time for a little freshening.

So, the BMW was off, for a week-and-half.

Which left me with just one car.

    To take to work.

    Every day.

    1059.

Little ambivalent/hesitant about using her that way --- at first. Even though she may have been originally built to be used that way, I don’t think of 1059 as anything even pretending to be a regular commuter. Fuel economy, comfort, ease of use . . . not to mention a rather less-than-impressive, hamster-sized presence on roads over-run with 2 and 3-ton SUVs?

    Uhhhh --- NO.

Actually gave serious thought to renting something.

But, then again . . . would be kinda fun to run around in a Porsche --- more than once a week. A horsefly among the rhinoceroseseseses.

Many are called, but few are chosen . . .

    1) At rest

    2) Supporting Our Economy ------- '. . . . . p!nche bueno . . . .'

    5) Supporting Your Local Sheriff --- NOT if I can help it

    4) Commuting with Nature

    5) Being useful. Porter (The Nasty Dog) needed a bath, and so, consequently, his Dog Towels needed drying. (Rear grills make excellent towel-driers.) And now my car has stunk-up my dog . . .
