    Caliper police.

    Hi All,

In the search for some more brake power for my proposed ST build, i have stumbled upon a couple of pairs of 917 early 4 pot girling calipers.

    [IMG][/IMG][IMG][/IMG]

Wanting to keep the 70 ST as period as possible, and the fact that these stop the 917 at 200mph down the mulsanne straight, thinking of putting these up front.

    38mm pistons, 3.5 bolt spacings, and fit behind a 7 x 15 fuch.

The doubts. Do any of the caliper experts know where i could get these refurbished, or find caliper seals, kits etc.

    Living in hope.

    Any information greatly appreciated.

    Dave

I think that Eric Shea at PMB Performance might be interested in giving them a try. He does an excellent job on the S calipers. He is "Neunelfer" on this forum.
You say a couple of pair, so are there more available? PM me with details please.

Thanks guys, spoke with eric, he has no experience, parts for these calipers.

Girling, being a company from birmingham in the uk, i have managed to find a company to refurbish these calipers.

Still trying to find out the model number for these calipers.

They were fairly common on lots of race cars in the early 1970,s.

    Anyone no the model designation.?

Is the caliper bridge cast iron and the cylinder blocks that bolt on Aluminium?

They may also have '18' stamped on them.

If so I have a new pair.

Dave's calipers appear to be all aluminum.
Joe, can you post some photos of what you have please. These bridges came in different widths I believe. What are the widths on yours?

    Girling Calipers

They look like Girling 18/4 Calipers to me.

I believe that they were a standard fitting of the Ford GT40 and even the Mirage. I think that the Lola T70 used them as well.

The matching rears would be a Girling 16/4. I would think if you use them with standard M type rears balance could be an issue.

The piston size is comparable to the 3.3 Turbo fronts (smaller than 2.8/3.0 RSR) and a pair of 3.3 turbo rears with 30mm pistons would be a good match.

The 3.3 Turbo has a 3.5" mounting so the Trailing arm would need modifying o fit or you could machine the rear caliper as per:

    http://www.vehiclecraft.com/Brakes/930T_mod.htm

I would still fit a good bias bar pedal box to maximise the benefit of these brakes.

I would imagine you will beed some large rotors as I think that the 18/4 is designed for a 1.25" thick 12" dia disc so you may need Turbo front hubs as well or you will increase the front track.

    Chris,

See the difference in the shape of the calipers between the mounting holes.
