Talk me out of a modern Porsche!

Ok, I was just scanning Pelican and looking at the prices of 993's, 996's and 997's and they are getting just priced so damn low. I use a Toyota Tundra for work and I don't need to drive a truck for work anymore. I cover Oregon, Idaho and Southern Washington so I drive a lot. I know I could get better gas mileage with a Porsche. Even a fricking 996 tiptronic would be better than driving my truck and I could beat the heck out of it and not feel bad. What am I missing here??

    Scott,
I think you are right. I have the same thoughts. I traded my 12MPG sport UTE for a highly efficient VWTDI Wagon. Mileage, versatility, handling for $30k but....... the more I drive my Porsches the more I would like one for a DD. You can buy a very nicely equipped 05 997 for $45,000. This budget would also get you an 02-04 996 TT, a mint 97-98 993 C2S or C4S; all very good cars.

My Daily driver is a Cayenne, I always thought it was odd that the Porsche that I use to tow my track car was faster than my "race car"

You really need modern car, why not a Porsche.

Mine is a Cayenne GTS - traded my '06 C4S Cab in on it. Love it.

Guys I gotta tell ya, I never thought I would buy a newer P car but while my wife and I were out shopping for a Q5 I drove an 06 997 with 16k miles on it and feel in love with it. So in one day my wife drove out of the dealership with her new Q5 and me in the 06 997; expensive day! So in the end I think I will have the best of both worlds, the 67 softie for occasional use and the 997 to have a blast around town.

If you need a P-car just to trash around, you can't beat the prices of the 996's. Unfortunately, they are the ugliest of the 911 variations, but they are quick, and comfy, and cheap! I see them on CL all the time for around $20k. Yes, the motors randomly blow up, but a factory rebuilt crate motor is less than $10k. Or haul it to the junkyard and find another 996 to beat on.

If you're buying the 996 or later series of cars I recommend that you only buy the Turbo or GT variants. Although, if you do buy a "standard" 911, if something does happen to the engine you just throw away the broken one and get a new lump from Porsche ... and it comes with a two-year Factory warranty.

    Otherwise, get a 964.

996's are ugly and 964 bumpers are fugly but the prices are getting just crazy cheap to not look at. I've owned an RS America and really liked it except for the bumpers but it's not really a day to day driver. I'm thinking an early 997? Aren't those motors worked out? Or maybe a 993 of some sort.

After our love thread on the 964 I anticipated the moment when the 996 became too great a value for it to be ignored as a daily driver. If you are willing to drive a Cayenne and you do not need space, you are a candidate for a 996. There are some nice cars out there for the price of a well cared for 964 ($20,000).

To me the real value in the 996 family are the GT3s (not much of a daily driver if you need the occasional 3 passenger) and the TT. Both of these cars did not suffer from the same maladies of the 996 but suffer from the same design flaws. Currently, there is a relatively speaking flood of GT3s available. Sunday night there were 7 on Ebay and I came across 2 more not listed there. In the same financial ball park reside the TTs. There are currently 44 TT coupes and Cabs on Ebay. Some of the noteables a 32,000 mile 2002 for $45,000, 19,000 mile 2003 for $55,000, 30,000 mile 2004 for $60,000 and a 2005 TTS Cab for $70,000. It should be noted a savy buyer would also be able to pick up a 30,000 mile 2005 Bentley GT for similiar money. Another very cool alternative use of the money you would spend on a well equipped E550 Mercedes or 5 Series BMW.
