    Oversrpay on vin sticker

Am unfortunately finding that I strongly prefer cars with original VIN sticker on the jamb and it seems MANY are showing overspray/bleeding on the sticker. Have found some great cars that had this and felt really bummed to discover it. Have come to realize that NOT painting the jambs is a good thing (yes, i'm a bit slow).

So, in the event i find a car i otherwise like is there a way to clean up bleeding on the sticker without damaging it? I imagine there would also be a 'ridge' of paint around it as well but perhaps others have dealt with this already?

Would love to hear of a way to mitigate this issue.

    Thanks,

    Erik

So nobody has dealt with overspray on a vin sticker? Or there is nothing that can be done to clean it up?

    Hi Erik,
Depends on how heavy the overspray is. I have seen everything from a light fog to several coats (different colors, even!) completely covering the plate. Light coats can often be taken care of by rubbing gently with lacquer thinner or reducer on #000 steel wool. Heavy overspray often has such bad adhesion ( nobody prepped that plate, after all) that you might be able to chip it off with a plastic tool.

    Hope this helps.

well......the sticker says a LOT about the car methinks.

like you have said in the past, anybody can have a restored xxxxx but original only happens once!

i suspect this attitude will keep me out of an E but i think i'm willing to accept that.

not to be nit picky, but if original only happens once, and if thats what you're looking for, then i wouldn't go for a car thats been resprayed, and that has original paint.

i second toms sentiments about buying the car for the car and its over all condition.

acetone may work too.. but use extreme caution.. may eat through paint, and may eat through the sticker!

I must agree with some of that which has been written......
    BUT.
In the case of staying with original paint, at the expense of living with a dozen door dings, scrapes, etc., or risking a ridge on a taped off jamb sticker, I would rather live with the latter and work it down with some very judicious elbow grease.
3M Imperial handglaze, the tan liquid, not the white which leaves a powdery residue, is a wonderful agent used by alot of quality paint shops to do the first buff.
Applied lightly, and with a soft cotton cloth or diaper / towel, will remove or smoothen most paint, especially when fresh. Especially on the tag which has somewhat of a glossy and dissimilar patina.
When I told the guys who did my 74 - 2.0 to spare the vin tag at all costs, they tried to dissuade me. I prevailed, and a very high quality job was done around that area. Since the car remained the same color.......it looks almost as it did from the factory , barring the use of an electron beam microscope.
You would never know, unless pointed out by me.

Laquer thinner would be a second distant option , after the use of the 3m Hand Glaze didn't get it done.
Believe me, this stuff is magic, the Imperial Handglaze, with little to no chance of making a disaster out of things.
