I got the 72 I just bought back from a local indy shop here in Austin. I used TWPS, seems to be a solid place and they know the air cooled 911's really well.
My car has a hotrodded 3.2 from an 86 Carrera and because the PO didn't sort the car out after complete disassembly, there were many issues with it. I couldn't drive it much because the shift linkage set up was mess, so rather than to try to deal with all these issues myself, I wanted a pro to get the car stable so I can start driving it and put some break-in miles on it. Here's what's been done to date:
- Got the short shifter sorted by replacing some bushing and adjusting the linkage. Now I can find each gear reliably, no crunching. I do notice that with the rebuilt 915 transaxle and new synchros, gear changes are still pretty stiff, but with some mileage I'm told this will loosen up
- Freed up the dragging rear calipers. Wheels rotate freely now.
- Got the rev. 0 chip back from SW. The car is noticably stronger in the mid range than with the Autothority chip. Steve told me that this is a very conservative tune so the engine would be protected. Next Friday I'll do 3 dyno pulls at a local shop with a Dynojet and send the results to Steve for rev. 1.
- TPWS found that an intermittent dead engine problem was caused by loose electrical connections at the DME relay, and the Andial splitter/amplifier (it's a twin plug). Removed the carpet below the DME, relay and splitter and secured them to the metal floor for stability and better heat transfer (and reliability). PO had them just loosely laying on carpet.
- Troubleshot a number of electronic gremlins leading to frequently blown fuses. Main source of these problems was a frozen ventilation blower that was drawing over 20A when the switch was made. Replaced fuses and disconnected blower for replacement later.
- Rewired one of the high power relays for the H4 headlights. This relay was wired backwards and caused a constant drain on the battery
- Replaced the dual battery set up with a single battery conversion at Matt's suggestion. It's a simpler set up and now I have a small storage area where the second battery was. This car is so not original in so many areas that a single battery is not a big deal.
- Got the targa top back from Dan Petchel after a complete restoration. Dan's work is outstanding. It is a very tight fit now that the top isn't all loose and floppy and I had to install the reproduction of the original front seal that Dan has had reproduced. Now the top had NO rattles.
- Bought a space saver spare from TPWS. Waiting for my jack from Pelican Parts.
Now, I'm actually driving it and it's a lot of fun. The engine is really strong above 4500 RPM and has a reasonable midrange. My butt dyno tells me that when this car is in the power range, it pulls as hard as my 335i. I'm interested in seeing what the real dyno says. If this is a conservative tune from SW, I'm really looking forward to an optimized tune.
